Lesson Plan for Sam Houston and Margaret Lea
Fourth Grade
Objective: The student understands the importance of the Texas Revolution, the Republic of Texas, and the annexation of Texas to the United States. The student is expected to identify leaders important to the founding of Texas as a republic and state, including José Antonio Navarro, Sam Houston, Mirabeau Lamar, and Anson Jones.TEKS §113.15Social Studies, Grade 4 (b)(3)(C)

Assumptions: Students will learn about Sam Houston, his family and his role as a politician and his influence on Texas History.
Materials:Students will use the power point slide notes to learn about Sam Houston, his family and his service to Texas. They may work individually or in small groups (2-4) to explore the many events that influenced and shaped Houston’s life and Texas History.

Instructional Input:The teacher will share the power point slide presentation with the class and engage students in a class discussion to introduce the main points of the topic, and familiarize students with the navigation of the slides. She may assign students to groups of (2-4) and one concept relating to Houston’s life. In their groups students will research the topic assigned and view the respective slide and its primary sources, and complete the related worksheet. To culminate the activity students will come together for a whole group discussion and share what they discovered.
