WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE THE SPRAYBERRY LADY JACKETS BASKETBALL TEAM

There are seven major factors this coaching staff uses to evaluate the position of each player in the basketball program. Just how you, as an individual, compare with other team members in the composite of these factors will determine how much you will contribute to this team. The coaches realize that it would be very unusual if you were the best in every category, therefore, it is our responsibility to evaluate each player in the light of these criteria and put the five best players on the floor to play the game. We always strive to play the game the right way. Remember: Each player determines how much they play, not the coaches

  1. DESIRE TO PLAY TOUGH, AGGRESSIVE DEFENSE: The determination to play the kind of defense we want will result in more playing time and make it difficult for our opponents to score.
  2. DESIRE TO GET BACK ON DEFENSE: How quickly you get back to stop the opponents from getting easy transition baskets depends on how much hustle, self pride, and just plain guts you have. If you can get back fast, we want you on our team. TRANSITION DEFENSE IS THE TOUGHEST DEFENSE TO PLAY!!!!!
  3. COURT AGGRESSIVNESS AND REBOUNDING: This ability and knack to obtain the ball and thus keep the opponent from getting a second shot,or to obtain another possession for your team. The value of the ball cannot be overemphasized. The team that comes up with loose balls and rebounds usually wins close games. Remember: coaches have to play rebounders-You want to play-REBOUND
  4. DESIRE TO IMPROVE INDIVIDUALLY: This innate desire to be the best basketball player possible is the most outstanding quality of all true champions. It requires complete dedication, self-sacrifice, and the energy for long hours of practice. We call these players: GYMRATS! How much of your time and energy and sweat are you willing to give?
  5. MENTAL ATTITUDE: To be a winner, you must be willing to pay a bigger price than your opponent will ever pay. You must be willing to sacrifice personal glory for the welfare of the team. We are not interested in having high point players, we want to have to have the high point TEAM. You must play and practice with 100% effort so when final score is in, you can honestly, “I played as hard and smart as I could”
  6. FASTBREAK: Your speed, agility, and the ability to size up the situation and to handle the ball while moving at full speed are factors that determine how well you can fit into the program. Remember: there must be speed in the fast break, but control is most important. You must be able to look up the floor and run to your spots.
  7. OFFENSE: This encompasses not only the ability to shoot, but also to have the variety of shots and individual moves to get yourself free. Moving without the ball is a skill that separates the good from the great. We also value the player with the ballhandling ability, and team offensive concepts. The ability to shoot, score, handle the ball and hit the open player is the most valuable offensive weapon.
