Directions: You are writing two essays that equal 1000 words total. You decide how you want to split the word count, but one of the essays must be a minimum of 250 words. I have included the prompts and how you will “assemble” these essays. Both essays are due:
Prompt #1: Describe the world you come from—for example, your family, community, or school—and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.
Prompt #2: Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution, or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are today?
Requirements:
- name and date on each essay
- word count underneath name/date
- prompt # as title for each essay
- both essays must be typed and double-spaced
- no extra spaces between paragraphs—indent paragraphs
- 1” margins, regular font and font size (Times, New Century Schoolbook, New York, etc./12-size font)
- both essays are separate documents so do not combine into one page
- proofread
- make sure you are answering the prompt
- do not need to put prompt on essay (if you do, it does not count towards your word count)
- stay within the word count for each essay (if you are over a few, as in 3-5 words, that is O.K.)
Pre-write: You need to think about what you are going to discuss for each essay. A pre-write is not required, but highly recommended. A pre-write will help you stay on task and answer the prompt.
Final Note: Everyone is writing two personal statements—whether or not you are applying to a UC. It is a senior requirement that all seniors write a reflective essay and the personal statements fulfill this requirement.
