PENITENTIAL RITE FOR CANDIDATES
2ND SUNDAY IN LENT
After the homily
Assisting Minister:
Would our Candidates, along with their sponsors, come forward at this time for the Penitential Rite.
Presider (with hands outstretched)
Lord of infinite compassion and steadfast love,
your sons stand before you in humility and trust.
Look with compassion upon them as they acknowledge their sinfulness.
Stretch out your hand to save them and raise them up.
Do not allow the power of darkness to triumph over them,
but keep them free from sin as members of Christ’s body,
and sheep of your own flock.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God forever and ever. Amen.
Presider:
Candidates, bow your heads and pray.
All pray for some time in silence
Presider:(addressing the community)
Would the entire community of the Church please stand now
as we pray for our candidates:
Christ has already ransomed them in baptism.
Now they seek the forgiveness of their sins
and the healing of their weaknesses
so that they may be ready to be sealed with the gift of the Father
and fed at the Lord’s table.
Let us also pray for ourselves, who seek the mercy of Christ.
Let us pray for ______, who receive now God’s forgiveness for the first time, and for ourselves, who seek the mercy of Christ.
Assisting Minister reads the intercessions
- That we may open our hearts to the Lord Jesus with gratitude and faith, we pray to the Lord.
- That we may honestly try to know our failures and recognize our sins, we pray to the Lord.
- That, as children of God, we may openly admit our weaknesses and faults, we pray to the Lord.
- That in the presence of Christ we may express sorrow for our sins, we pray to the Lord.
- That we may be delivered from present evils and protected against those to come, we pray to the Lord.
- That we may learn from our Father in heaven to triumph by his love over the powers of sin, we pray to the Lord.
(After the intercessions the celebrant faces the candidates and with hands joined says)
Lord God,
In the mystery of the transfiguration
your Son revealed his glory to the disciples
and prepared them for his death and resurrection.
Open the minds and hearts of these Candidates
to the presence of Christ in their lives.
May they humbly acknowledge their sins and failings
and be freed of whatever obstacles and falsehoods
that keep them from adhering wholeheartedly
to your kingdom.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
(Presider then lays hands upon each of the candidates)
Presider(returning, then with hands outstretched over them says)
Lord Jesus, you are the only-begotten Son,
whose kingdom these Candidates acknowledge
and whose glory they seek.
Pour out upon them the power of your Spirit;
that they may be fearless witnesses to your gospel
and one with us in the communion of love,
for you are Lord forever and ever. Amen.
Assisting Minister:
Would the Elect, please come forward now for the dismissal blessing?
Presider:
My dear Candidates and Elect,
may the light of the transfigured Lord
shine upon each of you
and transform you into the likeness of Jesus.
Go in peace, and may the Lord remain with you always.
(continue now, as usual, with either the Creed or preparation of the gifts)
RCIA Rite of Dismissal: To be used when there are no Elect
[Catechetical leader or Presider invites those to be dismissed:]
†Would our candidate/s and/or catechumen/s
please come forward?
[once gathered in the dismissal area, continues:]
†My dear candidate/s and catechumen/s,
may the light of the transfigured Lord
shine upon each of you
and relieve you of any fear or holding back
on your faith journey.
May you be transformed into the likeness of Jesus
as you continue to experience the Lenten season.
Go now in the peace of Christ
to reflect on the Scriptures
and break open the Word of God in your lives.
God bless you.
[a dismissal mantra is sung as they are led out, and then follows the community’s Profession of Faith.]
Choose one of the following Creeds:
Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed
†‡I believe in one God, the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven
and by the Holy Spirit
was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
or, the Apostles’ Creed, may be recited:
†‡I believe in God, the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended into hell;
on the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand
of God the Father almighty;
from there he will come to judge
the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.
Amen.
