The University of Manitoba Student Residences provides clean and safe accommodation (1,200) beds for full-time students during the academic year and for summer students and conference clients during May to August. The department consists of four (4) residences; Arthur V. Mauro Residence, Mary Speechly Hall, Pembina Hall Residence, and University College Residence and is operated on a cost recovery basis.
Key Characteristic Duties and responsibilities:
Under general supervision, the Residences Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing basic maintenance in the Student Residences as assigned on a day-to-day basis. This includes (but is not exclusive to) performing the following tasks to the standards outlined in the National Occupational Analysis, and where required, consulting with Physical Plant trades:
General Tasks
- Perform minor repairs and maintenance (that does not require a tradesperson designation) in student suites, common areas, office and on-student areas and building exteriors.
- Perform minor scheduled preventative and routine maintenance such as calking etc. May provide support in the event of an emergency or major project.
- Complete building repairs and maintenance tasks including minor electrical (replace switch plate and outlet covers; reset breakers); replace ceiling tiles; adjust / replace blinds and curtain hardware; repair / replace door hardware; troubleshoot and repair Salto and Caba lock system; replace floor or carpet tiles in small area; minor drywall patch and paint touchups; window screen repairs and replacement; minor plumbing (replace toilet flapper; seat replacement; handle replacement; unclog sink, toilet and showers); minor kitchen and washroom repairs (replace aerator, leaky gaskets, sink handles, and worn washers; repair silicone); lightbulb replacement; HVAC troubleshooting (turning radiator valves on/off; thermostat adjustment; reset heat pumps); and maintain propane BBQs (clean or replace burner; fill propane tanks; assemble units).
- Perform furniture assembly / move; troubleshoot faulty fridges (adjust legs, unplug drains); repair and adjust furniture (shelving, drawers, loose keyboard trays); and maintain laundry rooms (clean filters; minor equipment maintenance); hang pictures, signage, bulletin boards, and tv mounts etc.
- Useandmaintaintoolsandequipment.
- Track repair requests and completion dates utilizing the Student Residences’ online database.
- Assist with assessing and preparing room inventory prior to move in and evaluating room condition at move out.
- In absence of Facilities Coordinator, liaise with Physical Plant trades and external contractors as required.
Qualifications Required:
The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory) job performance are:

☒ / License: Must hold a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s License.
☒ / Must have Class 5 Power Engineer Certification
Level of Formal Education:
High School Diploma (Grade 12)Experience: (Please note that these should read minimum qualifications, e.g. Minimum of 5 years directly related experience post qualifications.
Minimum 3 years - significant practical or position related experienceSKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Good interpersonal and communication skills to coordinate and facilitate work with students, co‐workers, jurisdictional authorities and other trades.
- Must be able to communicate clearly and capable of following and executing instructions in English (verbal and written)
- Must be able to work independently or in teams with minimal supervision.
- Must have good organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Must be tactful and able to follow privacy and confidentiality residence policies as it pertains to room entry. Must have knowledge of FIPPA and PHIA.
- Must ensure the safety of yourself and others in the work environment.
- Knowledge of the different types of personal protective equipment and when to use them.
- Must be self-motivated, dependable, conscientious, and take pride in quality workmanship.
- Basic computer skills (MS Word and Excel) and ability to maintain records.
Working conditions & Physical requirements:
- The work environment across the University Residences includes high rise buildings.
- Most work is physically demanding and some work environments present hazards that involve safe work procedures and precautions.
- Must be physically capable of performing the duties as assigned.
- Must be able to pass required FIT assessment and related safety training. Must be able to work in awkward, confined spaces and high locations.
- Must be able to perform related duties as assigned.

Physical Plant will instruct all employees to complete an Orientation Workshop, normally during the first day on the job, and the Health and Safety Orientation Module, normally during the probation period.
