THE TERRAIN
There will be a mix of single tracks, public dirt roads and some bitumen, unfortunately we can’t get around the bitumen but we’ve kept it to a minimum. The tracks will involve navigating soft sand, rocks and hazards including bull dust holes.
The Apex Outback Postie Bike Ride is for experienced riders only. The terrain is difficult, even experienced riders will be challenged. For health and safety requirements if registration is opened to new riders, all new riders will be contacted prior to their registration being accepted to confirm their riding ability. As always please ride within your limits. Remember it’s a ride not a race!
THE BIKE
The bike must be an automatic Honda CT 110 ‘Postie’ – NO CLUTCH in good mechanical and roadworthy condition. We recommend a bike newer than 1997. The bike must have current registration and you must hold a current motorcycle license.Any modifications are ok as long as it’s legal and still basically resembles a Postie.Beware of modifications though, history has shown the more modifications on a bike the more likely it is to have mechanical issues that are unable to be resolved on the ride.
FUEL RANGE
You will need a fuel range of 240 kms for the stretch between Port Augusta & Wilpena. A standard Postie will do approximately 20 kms per litre on this type of ride. Therefore you will need a minimum of about 12 litres on your bike. The standard tank holds about 5.4 litres so you will need a further 10 litres minimum. This can be done by adding another tank; an old 10 litre XR tank or similar is ideal or you could carry two 5 litre plastic fuel cans on the rear carrier. If you choose the fuel can option they must be approved to carry fuel and be secured firmly to your bike.
BACK UP VEHICLES
There will be back up vehicles to collect any broken bikes and or riders, it will carrysome emergency fuel (rememberyou must be self-sufficient with fuel between each petrol stop), water, snacks and a few spares.
Anenclosed luggage truck will carry your overnight bag with clothes etc., BUTPLEASE KEEP IT AS SMALL AND LIGHT AS POSSIBLE.
SAFETY
Is a priority, this is a fun event to raise money for a worthy cause so the last thing we want is anyone getting hurt. We will be in some remote areas and emergency help could be a considerable time away, so please ensure you ride within your limits.
You will need to have a full faced helmet, goggles/visor, gloves, boots, sturdy pants, kidney belt and ride in a long sleeved jacket, preferably with armor. Please do not underestimate the difficulty of this ride because you are on a Postie bike. Very few riders navigate these routes without an off, the terrain is very rough with significant vibration and hazards.
To ensure safety any rider who continually holds back up vehicles up during the ride will be trailered, to ensure timeliness for all riders to back up crews and medical aid.
We are extremely grateful to have qualified paramedics attend the ride who will be able to attend any emergencies if they occur. However this does not replace the need to have ambulance cover as SA Ambulance will be called to transport you to the nearest hospital.
We strongly recommend you have ambulance cover.
Support riders all wear hi visibility safety vests, and most carry portable UHF radios.Satellite telephones (for emergency use only), EPIRB, first aid kits and water are carried by back up vehicles.
RIDERS BRIEFING WEDNESDAY 24th AUGUST
All riders must attend the briefing.
Briefing will be held at 8.30pm in Port Augusta exact location and info will be sent out closer to the ride.
PARKING
A lock up area will be arranged for all participants’ vehicles and trailers in Port Augusta. We will advise the exact location of the compound and all the details and if necessary provide you with a map at the briefing.
BUYING AND SETTING UP A POSTIE
BUYING A POSTIE
If you do not have a ‘Postie Bike’ the committee can assist as we have accessed a small number of Honda CT 110 “Postie Bikes’, which will be available for purchase by 1st time riders for $1,195 please contact Justin Voumard at for further details.
POSTIE SET UP
Tyres/Tubes
The stock tyres should be replaced with trial type tyres. Please do not use knobble tyres experience has shown that they are extremely prone to flats. Heavy duty tubes should be fitted to front and rear. Tyre pressure should be 38 PSI.
The committee will have available a limited supply of new 17 x 2.75 8 Ply tyres and tubes available that have proven to be very reliable over multiple rides, the tyres are $30 each and the tubes are $15 each plus freight. We will have a collection point in Kadina, Jamestown & Adelaide. A photo of the tyre is attached. To order contact Andrew Venning via email or phone
0428 211 216.
Bearing/Chains
Wheel bearings, steering head bearings and chain and sprockets must be in excellent condition. A standard DID chain will suffice. “O ring” chains are harder to repair in the dirt and mud. When fitting a new chain, adjust to middle adjustment to give your rear wheel clearance in the swing arm. This will prevent the back wheel clogging up with mud.
Noisy cam chains should be replaced and if the motor is smoky replace the rings.
Clutch/Filters
Ensure clutch is ok or replace clutch plates and retain the old ones as spares, while the clutch is out clean the oil filter.
Don’t forget to change the oil and clean the air filter.
Fuel Tank
If adding an extra fuel tank an old 10 litre XR tank or similar is ideal put a tube or some padding between the tank and frame to prevent rubbing. The original fuel tank has two fuel hoses running to the fuel tap, the top hose is reserve and the bottom is “on”. Connect the extra tank to the bottom “on” hose and leave the original tank connected to reserve. Both fuel lines should be fitted with filters.
The key can be relocated to the speedo mount to accommodate the extra tank if needed.
