How to Know the Bible

Objectives:

1)  To motivate the believer to read and study the Bible

2)  To teach the believer basic Bible Study skills

Section I – Why know the Bible

Besides the 5 reasons to know the Bible, there are other reasons as well.

1.  To prepare oneself for service. (I Peter 3:15; I Timothy 4:6)

2.  To sanctify our lives. (John 17:17; I Peter 1:14-19)

3.  It is God’s will that we dwell on the Word and obey it. (Joshua 1:8; Colossians 3:16)

4.  Understanding the Scriptures helps Christians know God more deeply. (John 5:39; Proverbs 2:1, 5)

Hermeneutics –

The objective of hermeneutics is to allow the text to speak.

Step 1: Preparation

According to James 1:21, we are to approach the Word of God with

Purity and humility.

Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.”

What are the 5 W’s? Who, Why, What, When, and Where

Apply them to this passage.

Step 3: Interpretation

True or False: Other Scriptures, speaking on the same subject, cannot help in the interpretative process.

True or False: The Bible is never hard to understand especially if you are a Christian.

Step 4: Application

1.  How would you apply Acts 1:8? Use the “SPECS” system for this verse.

2.  True or False? There is only one correct interpretation of a given passage and there is only one application of a particular passage.

Step 5: Repetition

1.  Bible study is a repetitive process.

2.  Bible study is a lifelong process.
