3.POLARITY CHECK...... 5

PREFACE: This procedure describes the useand illustrates the results of measuring the SPQASplittable Quadrupole via the Polarity Checker initially designed for the BMA series of magnets.

1.The testing probe has been modified to include only four sensors, enough to determine polarity and strength of the magnet, yet sufficiently small to be inserted in the magnet aperture. The software has not been modified.

2.If any of the testing does not match criteria listed in the testing procedure contact theproject leader.

Note: The total resistance of the Horizontal and Vertical Dipole at room temperature is about 13 Ohms.

Thetotal resistance of the Quadrupole at room temperature is approximately100 Ohms.

Note: Ensure magnet lead labels are firmly installed prior to polarity testing the

magnet.

Label are as follows;

a. HD +; HD -

b. VD +; VD –

c. Q +; Q–

3.MATERIALS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THIS PROCEDURE.

  1. Split Quad Magnet Polarity Test Cart.
  2. Magnet lead labels.
  3. Fluke 77 DMM or equivalent.
  4. SPQA Wooden base fixture.
  5. Power Supply set to 40Volts, 250mA

Procedure

  1. Ensure that the orientation of the magnet is as in Figure 1. (Make sure the magnet is set on top of the SPQAwooden base test fixture).
  2. Ensure the two splice leads for each of the coils are spliced together.
  3. Create an Excel file with the name to include the testing date and the magnet serial#. (Ensure the file is saved as a .xls fileand ensure to use the file “Dev 1” as it is the only file that will work with this test stand.)
  4. Left click the file path button and set the file path to the.xls file you created in step #3.
  5. For the first test ensure the “Append (New File)” is set to New file. For subsequent testing ensure the button is set to “Append to file”.
  6. Connect the equipment as in the attached schematic of Figure 3 ensuring to observe proper power supply polarity (Red=+, Black= -) and ensure all the polarities are properly connected and secure with the designated clips.
  7. Ensure that the orientation of the magnetic probe is as in Figure 2. The arrow on probe #4 should point to the magnet leads.
  8. The Power Supply setting is set to 250 mA with a maximum voltage of about 40V.
  9. Run the program located on the desktop (Polarity_checker5.vi).
  10. Once the program is running reset the Watch Dog on the Polarity Tester Box (in the front) prior to applying power to it. The watchdog light in the front should go off.
  11. Apply power and select the Horizontal Dipole from the selection. Left click on “Start Test” button then verify the test result. Check for consistency of shape, position of the peaks, and magnitude. See Figure 4.
  12. Select the Vertical Dipole from the selection. Left click on “Start Test” button then verify the test result. Check for consistency of shape, position of the peaks, and magnitude. See Figure 5.
  13. Select the normal Quadrupole from the selection. Left click on “Start Test” button then verify the test result. Check for consistency of shape, position of the peaks, and magnitude. See Figure 6.
  14. Upload test results into the traveler.

Note:If lead polarity labels are removed for any reason, then polarity testing must be completed again to verify lead polarity.
