Spanish Interpreter/Orientation Leader Position Overview

The Office of New Student Orientation and Parent Relations (NSOPR) is looking for individuals who can assist Spanish-speaking family members of new students with Spanish/English interpretation between patients/families and university staff. Interpreters will attend orientation sessions with Spanish-speaking parents/family members and interpret the speakers presentation, translate any questions the parents/family members have from Spanish to English for the presenter, and answer questions about the orientation program for parents/family members.

Orientation leaders are mentors and role models, assisting with the facilitation of activities with new students and family members. When students are not needed for interpreting, they will be assisting with orientation activities and new students as orientation leaders.

NSOPR Mission Statement

To assist new students with their transition to the university’s academic, social, and cultural community through purposeful programs, services, and resources that will provide a foundation for student success and retention. NSOPR also serves families of new and current students with programs and resources that will help them understand and provide support for their student’s initial transition to college all the way through to graduation.

Goals of Orientation

  • to assist new students, their parents, and family members intheir transition to the University;
  • to assist new students in learning about the academic program, policies, and faculty expectations of students;
  • to assist new students in learning about various services and resources on campus;
  • to assist new students, their parents, and family members in learning about the various aspects of campus life including, traditions, campus activities, and support services;
  • to assist new students in meeting UIS administrators, faculty, and students.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a welcoming campus experience for new students and their Spanish-speaking families;
  • Serve as an interpreter during Orientation sessions that parents/family members want to attend;
  • Facilitate discussions with parents/family members during refreshment breaks and meals;
  • Operate as part of the Office of New Student Orientation & Parent Relations staff and a representative of the University of Illinois Springfield;
  • Perform duties as assigned, help as needed with duties that emerge over the course of NSOPR programming.
  • Provide a welcoming campus experience for new students and their families;
  • Lead an O-Group by facilitating discussions and enhancing the group development process;
  • Be a positive role model for new students, remembering that you are operating as part of The Office of New Student Orientation and Parent Relations and representing the University of Springfield;
  • Check email for updates weekly through the summer and daily during training and Launch Week activities.

  • Show enthusiasm for the University of Illinois Springfield and its history as Sangamon State;
  • Promote campus traditions, programs, and services;
  • Encourage new student attendance at activities and events;
  • Advise and assist students with questions and concerns regarding the University and University life;
  • Participate in activities and events with the new students including evenings and Saturday sessions as assigned;
  • Perform all responsibilities in a punctual, reliable, and conscientious manner;
  • Exercise mature judgment, good humor, patience, and flexibility;
  • Be a respectful and considerate team member;
  • Demonstrate commitment to the goals of Orientation and the people we serve; and
  • Observe and reinforce all University of Illinois Springfield policies, and local, state and federal laws.

Requirements

Candidates must…

  • be a currently enrolled Undergraduate student at UISin the spring 2018 semester and be enrolled in fall 2018 semester classes at UIS;
  • have a fluency in English and Spanish to be able to translate information from orientation sessions from Spanish to English and English to Spanish;
  • have attended/participated in an UIS Orientation program;
  • have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.25 and good academic and disciplinary standing with all UIS communities through the remainder of your commitment with NSOPR;
  • have some knowledge of UIS, its students, academics, campus life, traditions, and history as Sangamon State
  • have a positive attitude toward learning, meeting challenges, thinking creatively, and working as a member of a team;
  • be able to meet expectations of Employment Availability: OL training and orientation programs (see Timeline);

Compensation

  • Hourly wage for training, orientation programs, and staff meetings - $11.25/hour;
  • NSOPR pays for housing in the Summer Conference Hall - $30/day during June and July employment, an approximate value of $540, plus the $25/day August early arrival fee, an approximate value of $200;
  • NSOPR will provide some meals during Orientation programs and some meals during June, July and August training – an approximate value of $507. Students will be responsible for meals not included in training and Orientation programs;
  • Uniform polos, t-shirts and nametags will be also provided – an approximate value of $65. Students will need to provide their khaki pants, shorts or skirts, and suitable footwear (no open-toed sandals, flip-flops, or clogs/mules/slip-on shoes).

Selection

  • Initial screening includes checking grades and standing with the University and a review of your application materials;
  • Individual interview with the Director of NSOPR, GA, and SOC(s).
  • Group Interview with other applicants, the Director of NSOPR, GA, and SOC(s)

  • (2) two completed orientation team recommendation forms- one from a member of the 2017 or 2016 Orientation Team member &the other from a UIS administrative staff or faculty member who has worked with you enough to address how you meet the OL criteria (Make sure you contact your references and let them know you are applying for this position and why you want the position. Send them the O-Team Recommendation Form 2018 (you can email the document or send them a link to the webpage where they can download it).   • (3) a Spanish Language Competency Reference from either Sophia Gehlhausen in the Diversity Center or UIS Spanish Instructor, Stephanie Martinez (this means you have to take the initiative to contact Sophia or Stephanie for a meeting where they can evaluate your Spanish language skills and ask for them to write a reference certifying your Spanish speaking capabilities); and

New Hire Orientation *February 21 – 5 p.m.

  1. Students will need to bring federal/state issued id or driver’s license and their social security card (the actual card not a copy) to complete employment paperwork if this is their first job at UIS. Be sure to have both of these items before attending New Hire Orientation. If you do not have these items with you when you come to the NSOPR New Hire Orientation, you will be asked to come to another session. Students need these items to complete their I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification (a federally required form) and for a criminal background check.
  2. The UIS Undergraduate Checklist must be submitted to Financial Assistance/Student Employment, with your federal/state issued id or driver’s license and their social security card within 3 business days of your New Hire Orientation session.
  3. First time UIS student employees must check UIS webmail for an email with the subject line “UI New Hire Login ID for (your name),” this is also known as Nessie New Hire. This information needs to be completed with five days of receiving this email. You will not be able to start work until it is completed. . If you have difficulty with any of the forms in Nessie New Hire it is your responsibility to contact Financial Assistance immediately.
