PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT (PPE)
/ Safety glasses or face shield must be worn at all times in work areas and specifically when operating a hand drill. / / Long and loose hair must be tied back.
/ Appropriate footwear must be worn when preforming work with powered hand drills. Shoe must be fully enclosed. No open toed shoes allowed. / / Close fitting/protective clothing must be worn. Remove strings hanging from pullovers/sweaters.
/ Rings and jewelry (long necklaces / bracelets, etc.) must not be worn. Lighters, matches and cell phones are not allowed in the shop area when the shop is operational. Wearing gloves is not allowed due to entanglement risk when using hand drills. / / Hearing protection must be worn as per shop location protocols and when using this machine constantly for an extended period of time. Hearing protection is always recommended when using powered portable hand drills.
Other PPE Considerations / Dust masks may be required depending on material being worked on and potential worker sensitivities.
HAZARDS PRESENT / SUPPORTING
REQUIREMENTS
  • Discharge of objects or materials from drilling process
  • Drill bit binding causing kickback or violent turning of the drill body
  • Entanglement potential with tuning bit
  • Cut and puncture potential with drill bit exposure
  • Eye injury potential from discharged objects or materials from drilling process
  • Respiratory risks when material being drilled becomes airborne (sensitivities)
  • Potential awkward postures when positioning to use the drill
  • Noise exposure from prolonged period of equipment use or workspace environment.
  • Metal friction heating at point of operation (bit and material potentially)
  • Other, not yet identified based on experience.
/
  • General shops and department safety orientations
  • Read and understand general safety rules and regulations
  • Applicable other drilling process safe work procedures
  • Safety related contents of applicable Operator Manual
  • Other instruction and supervision
  • Other, not yet identified based on experience

SAFE WORK PROCEDURE
STANDARD SAFE PRACTICES
  • ONLY use this machine or perform this process AFTER a supervisor or teacher instructed you in safe procedures and operation and have given you authorization to perform associated tasks.
  • ALWAYS use tools and equipment for their intended purposes only.
  • ALWAYStake out of service and report damaged equipment to your supervisor / teacher without delay.
  • ALWAYS refer to manufacturers owner’s manual for specific safety and operating instructions for specific makes and models of equipment when applicable

Pre-Job Safety:
1)Check workspaces to ensure no slip or trip hazards are present and to ensure that your body positioning is stable when attempting to drill.
2)With power disconnected, inspect the drill to ensure there is no obvious damage, the power cable or battery is in good condition.
3)Select and install appropriate sized, sharp and damage free drill bit into the chuck. Ensure bit is secured and level in the chuck prior to attempting drilling operation.(Clockwise to close or tighten chuck, counterclockwise to open or loosen chuck)
4)Supply power to drill, either plug in or install battery after installing bit. Test drill operation to ensure it is working properly, and that it starts and stop correctly when pulling and releasing the drill trigger.
Set Up:
5)Plan the drilling task to ensure, using all appropriate means necessary, that materials being worked on are secured, stable and will not move during drilling, that the drilling will occur straight on to the work piece and not at an angle, and that you can make the drill with 2 hands positioned on the drill body. If possible, reposition material or workspace to allow 2 hands on drill. If it is impossible to make the drill with 2 hands on drill, ensure that no part of your body or materials not intended for drilling are placed in the path of the drill bit avoiding injury and material damage.
6)Ensure that drilling process is not started with the bit pressed with pressure against the material being drilled. Avoid unnecessary handling of the drill bit to avoid cuts or entanglement. Do not were gloves when drilling.
7)Put on prescribed personal protective equipment
Operate / Perform Process:
8)Position and place 2 hands on drill. Pull drill trigger and with gentle but firm pressure apply bit to the work piece so it starts into the work material. Slow the rate of speed as the bit digs in to the material.
9)Always use firm but not excessive force straight on the drill with 2 hands to avoid bit breakage, the bit slipping off of the material and potential binding / kickback. For drill large holes, a small pilot hole is recommended. Avoid drilling with one hand and holding materials with other.
10)Withdraw drill and bit with care to avoid binding or kickback or causing additional flying debris.
Post Job Procedure:
11)Transport work piece if required. If work piece is large, heavy or awkward, get assistance from coworkers.
12)Replace drill to proper storage location. Remove dust/debris from the drill and clean the area. If there is a lot of dust, wear a dust mask while cleaning the area.
13)Report any hazardous situations to your supervisor / instructor immediately.
Lockout Procedure:
1)Unplug hand drill or remove battery (electrical energy isolation)
2)Apply appropriate size plug lockout device to plug end
3)Apply lock and tag through lockout device. See safety manual, Lockout procedure for details
