We have only a conference room for 100 people at the faculty, but we can advocate it and allow the public to come.Let me see if we can arrange an event at the Opera house, and have him being hosted in the big Hall..and then may be a Brazilian film can be shown.Do you a film in mind?Are there films based on his works?Or I can also address a civil cultural center where people meet and that is very famous so we can also have him have an open event there.This is more public.
I will get back to you.
We will also address the media so do not worry about making a big fuss about the visit.The news was already on cover page of the magazine he will visit.
I will try also arrange something for him in Alexandria if he wishes. Does he have time for Saturday to spend a night in Alexandria?

I just wanted to inform you that I will be meeting tomorrow the head of a cultural center that is now more important than the Main Cultural Center-Opera House of Cairo.It is owned by a civil group and has a very diverse schedule every day..with audience from the middle class from all walks of life.It is the cultural center of the city now par excellence and is very well attended and publicised. The owner agreed to the idea and if we work it out we can have a 7PM-9PM open forum with Paulo on Thurseday by readers and then the reception at the embassy can start later in the evening.
When is Paulo coming and when is he leaving? I wanted to plan also a day in Alexandria and a free day to take him around in Cairo.

Our suggestion for the dates of arrival and departure of our travel to Egypt would be from May 23rd to May 27th.
Paulo prefers to concentrate the whole visit in El Cairo, and not to travel to Alexandria. He will love to go there but on another occasion.
We think organizing an open Forum with Paulo from 7 to 9 pm on Thursday 26th of May is an excellent idea, thank you. Please, let me known how your meeting was . Yes, the reception at the Embassy can start later in the evening.

I had the meeting and it was very fruitful.First we agreed that on the cultural agenda of the month we will try have Paulo4s picture, and the place is owned by a media company who has stands all over CAiro so his picture and the date of the event will be all over cairo.
Second the event will take place in the nile section hall so it will have the acapcity of 600 people at least.
Third I wanted to approcah you on getting a permission by the Beirut publisher to have three books by Paulo being re-published by permission especially for the visit in Egypt and sold without profit with cheap edition.If the publisher agrees we can go ahead and print and I approached Nahdet Masr publishing house and they can do that.If we get that the book will be sold at cost price which is less than a dollar..we can print 2000 copies of each novel and they will be sold at the events.
I discussed with the cultural center that we can arrange weekly starting May a novel every week in the center and this way the event of Paulo will be the peak and finale of the month..what do you think.?
I need you to approach the Beirut people and get the permission and we will put their logo on the cover along with the Egyptian publisher and write on the cover it is a non-profit copy during a visit by Paulo to CAiro.

pasados unos días ya del viaje a Marruecos, os quiero comentar que tengo la
percepción que ha sido muy importante la presencia de Paulo en el
lanzamiento de El alquimista en Marruecos, para apoyar a los coeditores
Marsam, para hacer realidad el deseo de muchos lectores de Paulo y abrir las
puertas del potencial de lectores futuro.
Seguimos trabajando con más ilusión si cabe.

1.- Acuerdo estratégico de coedición con empresas representativas del país/territorio en cuestión. Detallar qué tipo de distribución tienen (¿propia?/¿ajena?). Cuántos puntos de venta existen en el territorio y a cuántos llega el coeditor.
2.- Comunicado a medios de comunicación del acuerdo de coedición de la Biblioteca Paulo Coelho y de las sucesivas presentaciones de los libros.
3.- La presentación de la colección Biblioteca Paulo Coelho con El Alquimista y de las últimas novedades se hará mediante campaña especial de marketing. Detallar líneas generales de la campaña y acciones en puntos de venta: (posters, expositores, escaparates, etc.). Me pongo en contacto contigo para enviarte la respuesta del editor de Omán. Como verás, disponen de cuatro tiendas propias y además son los distribuidores de los museos, Carrefour o la Universidad.
Como verás en su mensaje, pienso que la propuesta que nos hacen es buena. Además de los de puntos de distribución tienen la capacidad de organizar una campaña en los diarios locales durante todo el año y visibilidad en el punto de venta incluyendo supermercados.
Mi sugerencia es venderle directamente la copias para el territorio de Oman. Si no puedes excluir Oman del contrato con el editor, al menos cederles los derechos del bolsillo de forma no exclusiva a ambos editores en este territorio.
Nosotros tenemos este tipo de pactos en territorios como el de Puerto Rico, que Estados Unidos considera como propio, pero donde Grijalbo tiene intereses. Cedemos los derechos de forma no exclusiva y acaba vendiendo más libros el que hace mejor trabajo y mejor promoción.

Regarding the English version of O Zahir, maybe you received the uncorrected
manuscript. The English translator is Margaret Jull Costa, one of the most
prestigious translators from Spanish and Portuguese. Apart from Coelho, she
translates Vargas Llosa, Javier Marías, Gabriel García Marquez or Saramago.
Regarding the publication of O Zahir in Armenian, I hope to receive the
marketing plan, the book cover and back cover texts for our approval soon.
We also need to know the final publication date.
We believe it is necessary to secure a strong campaign to raise awareness
for the book at the moment of publication. Most of the campaigns presented
to us so far work in this direction of getting total coverage of the market
at the moment of publication.
I would appreciate to receive a follow up of the activities of the launch
campaign, updated media planning, publication date of the pre-publication of
the 1st chapter, the general interview and The Genesis, the online campaign,
etc.
Later, it is very important to spread and reinforce the achieved success
among booksellers and readers. You need to plan a reinforcing campaign in

I am glad to finally send you the general bases for the co-edition agreement
and prices of The Alchemist, which Sirpus Publishing House from Barcelona
has forwarded us.
1. Sirpus needs to build a strategic co-edition agreement with
representative companies of the country/territory in question. They need to
know what kind of distribution the publishing house has (whether its own or
by another company). How many points of sale are there in the territory and
how many of them does the publisher reach?
2. Develop and implement a strategy to present Paulo Coelho's Library
starting with The Alchemist. We need a detailed marketing plan with the
general lines of the launch campaign. Please include the actions at the
points of sale: posters, displays, shop windows, etc. In accordance with the
publisher and based on their specific plan, Sirpus might collaborate in this
campaign.
3. To secure a strong presence in the local media regarding the co-edition
of The Alchemist and Paulo Coelho's library, and to create a vehicle for an
ongoing programme of future marketing initiatives.
4. Possible contacts with Ministry of Education or other organizations
(universities, institutes, net of libraries, etc.) to include the books in
educational programmes.

Following my last message, I would like to inform that paperback edition of "The Alchemist" in Arabic language was presented in Morocco and Mauritania during the Casablanca Book Fair (20th of February) by Sirpus and Marsams Publishing House in Rabat.
The publisher for this edition in Tunisia is Ceres-Demeter and the book will be presented at Book Fair of Tunisia in April 2005.
Paulo Coelho travelled to Casablanca as a Guest of Honour of the Fair and the Moroccan Ministry of Culture. We organized a book signing and a conference that was open to the general public. The venue was completely crowded and many readers had to stay outside the hall.
Regarding Sirpus, Ana Zendrera and Victor Mesalles are planning to travel to the London and Paris Book Fairs. If you are interested in talking directly to them, here are her contact details so that you can make an appointment:

showed it to Arab literary experts and it was
commended. I have the blue print now ready and
wondering if you are interested in having a look at it
to be considered for publishing. I am not aware of any
efforts made to translate this work before. I am aware
though that the Alchemist was translated-for the first
time- nearly two years ago.
The content of this book will appeal to the Arab
reader and it could, in fact, be a success. With
properly managed marketing campaign, sales will
definitely be significant. I would be welling to work

marketing. I have very detailed knowledge of the Arab

At present, two publishing houses publish Coelho's work in Arabic. Trade
editions are published by All Prints, which is based in Beirut, and mass
market pocket editions are published as co-editions directed by Sirpus,
which is based in Barcelona (Spain).
We have two possibilities: you can send us the translation and I will
forward it to our publishers for their evaluation and check if they are
interested, or you can send it directly to the publishing houses. In this
case, I would supply their contact details.
