Valentine’s Day

Every February 14th we celebrate Valentine’s Day by giving flowers, candy and cards to those we love. This is done to honour Saint Valentine.

Saint Valentine was a priest who served during third century Rome during the reign of Emperor Claudius the Second. Claudius the Second had banned marriages because he thought single men made better soldiers than married men. Saint Valentine secretly married couples and was put to death when Claudius the Second found out.

Another important figure for this holiday is Cupid. Cupid is often said to be a naughty boy who goes around and shoots people with his arrows, causing them to fall in love.

Valentine’s Day is a really special day. It ranks second only to Christmas in number of greeting cards sent.
