AIAA/AAS ASTRODYNAMICS SPECIALIST CONFERENCE

Hyatt Regency Monterey

Monterey, California

“CALL FOR PAPERS”

ABSTRACT Deadline: 3 January 2002

The 2002 Astrodynamics Specialist Conference, hosted by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and cosponsored by the American Astronautical Society (AAS), will be held August 5-8 in Monterey, CA. The conference is organized by both the AIAA Astrodynamics Technical Committee and the AAS Space Flight Mechanics Technical Committee.

Papers are being sought pertaining to all areas of astrodynamics. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

·  Orbital dynamics

·  Perturbations

·  Stability

·  Trajectory design and optimization

·  Navigation, guidance and control

·  Attitude dynamics of rigid and flexible space structures

Papers that contain experimental results or current data are of special interest to the program planning committee, and are especially encouraged.

Special session proposals will be considered from prospective session organizers. Special areas of interest include but are not limited to:

·  Parallel processing applications in astrodynamics

·  Attitude control and estimation for small satellites

·  Formation/constellation design and control

·  Low-thrust trajectory design

·  History and future of the U.S. Space program

·  International Space programs

·  Panel discussions

Special sessions may be as long as four hours for selected topics. Their intent is to invite discussion and the exchange of ideas regarding the topical area. Prospective special session chairs should submit a proposal consisting of a title, a brief description of the session, and a list of proposed activities and/or invited speakers and titles.

ABSTRACTS:

Papers will be accepted on the basis of extended abstracts. The extended abstract will be at least one page in length and should include a description of the problem addressed and the results obtained, as well as a brief summary of the solution procedure and relevance to astrodynamics research. Abstracts must also contain supporting figures and/or tables.

In addition to the extended abstract, a short abstract (100 words maximum) to be incorporated into the final program must be included. The following information for the primary author and all corresponding authors of the paper must accompany the extended and short abstracts: author name, affiliation, telephone number, fax number, and email address to facilitate future correspondence.

A "no paper, no podium" rule will be in effect for this conference; no author will be permitted to make a presentation at the conference if a written paper has not been submitted to AIAA Headquarters by the 3 June 2002 deadline. This rule does not apply to plenary session or invited speakers. Prospective authors should keep this rule in mind when submitting their draft manuscripts.

WARNING - TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER CONSIDERATIONS:

Prospective authors are reminded that technology transfer guidelines have extended considerably the time required for review of abstracts and completed papers by U.S. government agencies. Internal (company) plus external (government) reviews can consume 16 weeks or more. Government review, if required, is the responsibility of the author. Authors should determine the extent of approval necessary early in the paper preparation process to preclude paper withdrawals and late submissions.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION:

Prospective authors are invited to submit their extended abstract, short abstract, and corresponding author information electronically via the form provided on AIAA’s Web site at http://www.aiaa.org/author. The system will allow for file upload in the following formats: Word, WordPerfect, Text, RTF, and PDF. When submitting through the Web site, be sure to designate “Astrodynamics Specialist Conference” under the conference directory. All abstracts must be received no later than 3 January 2002. Letters of acceptance with complete instructions will be sent electronically to authors in April 200212002.

Authors having trouble submitting abstracts electronically should email AIAA technical support at: or contact the Technical Program Chairs. Questions about the abstracts themselves or abstract submissions should be referred to the Technical Program Chairs.
