Curricular Area: Art

Improvement Plan- 2017-18

Identify the problem.
  1. Implementing new standards
  2. Gaps in K-12 Art curriculum (gaps in exposure, gaps in knowledge and skills, gaps in students’ understanding of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design)
  3. Ensuring that students have the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful when transitioning between key grade levels (5th grade to 6th, and 8th grade to High School Introduction to Art)

Why does this problem(s) exist?
Identify two overarching goals.
  1. Greater continuity in K-12 Art Curriculum.
  2. Utilize SLO assessments and data in a more meaningful and consistent way K-12

Identify plan to meet the goals.
Goal 1 Plan:
  • Utilize the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design as a means of assessing student understanding and knowledge K-12
  • Elements and Principles are the common language used by all visual artists when creating artwork, talking about artwork, looking at artwork, analyzing artwork, and evaluating/critiquing artwork
  • Knowledge and skills essential for students K-12:
  • What the Elements and Principles are (definitions)
  • Understand the differences between Elements and Principles
  • Understand the connection between Elements and Principles
  • Analyze artwork using Elements and Principles (identify and describe how they are used/organized in a piece of artwork)
  • Correctly--and effectively--utilize and apply Elements and Principles to self-critique their work in process and critique their finished work
  • Give critical and meaningful feedback to others regarding work in process, as well as finished work
Goal 2 Plan:
  • Determine the most logical point to assess students (What grade levels? When?)
  • Determine/create SLO assessments that are directly tied to Elements of Art and Principles of Design
Responsible Parties:
Identify how progress is/will be measured.
We are in the process of providing consistent data K-12 (aligning curriculum, working on curriculum mapping, PlanBook, and discussing how to best utilize SLO assessments and data)
All grade levels:
  • Student self-assessment at end of projects
  • Teacher observation
  • Teacher rubric evaluation of students’ finished projects
Elementary School:
  • SLO at 5th grade level (Elements and Principles)
Middle School:
  • SLO at 7th grade level (Art Critique)
High School:
  • Lisa: SLO for Painting class
  • Elise: SLO for Photography class
  • End of semester assessments (final projects, or final exams)
