GREENS DINNER CLUB
January 1 - June 30, 2012

It's Dinner Club preparation time again for another six-month period, beginning January 1, 2012. Being part of the Greens Dinner Club is a great way to get to know your neighbors and enjoy spending time together with good food and conversation.
Each couple that would like to participate is assigned to a group of six or eight people, according to how many people request to be included. If you are unable to host eight in your group, please let me know when you e-mail me. Each couple in the group is responsible for hosting one gathering of their group during the six-month period. Each group can decide on convenient times and can meet in homes or go to a restaurant. The meal can be plain or fancy. You can invite others as long as those in your group are included.

AARP VOLUNTEER HONORED

Mark Neckameyer, of Gonzales, was named the Top Southeast States Driver Safety Program Volunteer for 2011, according to a news release from the AARP.
Don Robinson, regional coordinator for AARP, announced Tuesday that Neckameyer, who volunteers at the Gonzales and Donaldsonville Senior centers, was the top driver safety program volunteer for a five-state region.
The AARP Driver Safety Program has served more than 15 million people over age 50 since its inception in 1979. The program was created to encourage safe driving among people age 50 and older. The course teaches seniors the effects of aging on driving behaviors and how to adjust driving behaviors to accommodate for these changes, he said. The courses are taught and presented by unpaid volunteers trained by AARP, he said.
Neckameyer signed up and taught the Driver Safety Class to more than 100 local military veterans at the Gonzales American Legion Post and at the Gonzales and Donaldsonville Senior Centers during November.
“Besides driving safer, becoming more knowledgeable about newer driving laws like putting your lights on when using your windshield wipers and learning how to set up baby seats for grandchildren, people who take our class typically receive rebates of $70 to $300 per year from their auto insurance carriers,” Neckameyer said. “I calculate that our class has saved local drivers as much as $20,000 per year and the certificates are good for three years which means $60,000 in local spending instead of sending that money to insurance companies out of state. This makes me feel very good about what I am doing.”

RENTERS ARE WELCOME

With today's economy so bad, many residents and the developer are resorting to renting when homes don't sell. While renters do not have an ownership interest in the development, they constitute a vital part of our community. None of our legal documents, ie., Act of restrictions, Articles of Incorporation or Bylaws prohibit owners from renting their homes. However, owners have an obligation to educate their tenants as to the requirements of common-interest community living. Specifically, tenants, like all residents, are subject to the policies and rules andregulations of the association. We strongly recommend that owners have a written lease with their tenants which require tenants to comply with the association's governing documents.
We request that the owner provide the association president with the names and contact information of their tenants.Tenants are invited to join committees, participate in social activities, attend regular board meetingsand use the amenities. It is our hope that tenants will eventually become resident-owners in the Greens. While tenants are invited to attend the annual meeting, the governing documents permit only the person(s) on the title to the propertyvoting rights on those issues reserved to the members.

On behalf of many of our residents, patrons of the library, and those residing in Ascension Oaks Nursing Home, THANK YOU for your generosity. The books that have been donated to the PPHOA office are eventually moved to the Gonzales library which distributes them to libraries throughout our parish, as well as libraries through the south (replacing books destroyed by hurricanes). Other books and magazines are enjoyed by residents in Ascension Oaks Nursing home, or most got o St. Elizabeth Hospital Emergency Waiting Room. Children's books are also welcome. Donations are still accepted at the PPHOA office or phone Phyllis Catalano at 225-746-1468.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY – Charles Huggins celebrated his November 8th birthday with wife Karen at the Thanksgiving potluck.
CROWD – About 90 residents feasted on turkey, ham, and all the trimmings at the Thanksgiving potluck dinner. Thanks to the social committee for organizing another outstanding event.

RECIPE CORNER
CRANBERRY SAUCE WITH HORSERADISH
From Martha Cooper
(Martha brought this to the Thanksgiving potluck and had everyone asking for the recipe!)
1-16-oz. can Cranberry Sauce (with or without berries)
1/8 Cup Sugar*
5 Tbs. Horseradish
Salt (to taste)
1. Cook cranberry sauce and sugar until it makes a jell, about 10 to 15 minutes.
2. Add the horseradish and salt and cook until it starts to boil. Cool.
3. Serve over cream cheese with crackers or as sauce with turkey or ham. Keeps well in refrigerator.
Notes from Martha: *Cut back on the sugar (can be completely omitted if preferred). The original recipe, from The Advocate (Dec. 25, 2008), calls for a half cup sugar which my family found too sweet. Also, it calls for the horseradish in ounces (2 5/8 oz.). Be sure to use the fresh ground horseradish in the jar, not the creamy, usually available at Wal-Mart.

I would like to thank all of the people who participated in setting up both the fall displays and doing such a wonderful job to make Christmas colorful and festive. Barbara Leo, Bobbie Hughes, Penny Anderson, Sissy Bourgeois, Anna Lee Himel, Roberta Naden, Betty Beck, and Suzanne de Montluzin all joined together to get the job done and make it fun.
My special thanks to Ed Beck for helping set up the electric, Ted Horrobin for his woodworking skills, Mary Demarest for her wonderful ideas and creative artwork, and last but not least Frank Sheehan, Bob Points, and my husband Joel for always being available when I needed something special done.
