Statement on Qualifications reform, the new UCAS Tariff and admissions to Glyndŵr University

We have prepared the following statement to provide guidance to applicants, parents and advisers. If your query is not answered, please email us at .

The University will normally make conditional offers using the UCAS tariff where an applicant is studying for tariff bearing qualifications. If we require specific grades these will be clearly stated. The use of “and” and “/” will be used in offers to determine if multiple qualification types are required or if either qualification or a combination is acceptable.

Below is a guide of our requirements for common qualifications.

GCSEs

  • We will expect applicants to normally have achieved a minimum of 5 GCSE passes (A*-C, or 9-4) to include Maths and English/Welsh (if first language) or equivalent. From 2017 GlyndŵrUniversity will view the new Grade 4 as being equivalent to a C grade for applicants taking the new English GCSEs. For applicants from England,GlyndŵrUniversity will not require applicants to have passed the EBacc.
  • For Welsh applicants from 2017 entry GlyndŵrUniversity will accept either GCSE Mathematics or GCSE Mathematics Numeracy at grade C or above unless stated otherwise under specific course pages on our website.
  • For acceptable English and Maths equivalents, please email stating the course you wish to study.

AS levels

  • GlyndŵrUniversity considers each application on an individual basis and achievement at AS level is considered alongside predicted grades. Where an AS level has been completed/is being studied but not continued to A level, we may decide to include this in an individual’s offer. From 2017 GlyndŵrUniversity will continue to consider AS levels in the same manner using the revised tariff points.

A levels

  • We appreciate that some students may apply to University in 2016-18 with a mix of old and new style A levels and that changes in England are different to Wales. GlyndŵrUniversity will not discriminate between different years/styles. We will continue to be flexible by reviewing applicants’ grades at confirmation and potentially accepting applicants where there is a shortfall between the offer made and the achieved grades.
  • Please note all courses accept A level General Studies as long as course specific requirements (such as Level 3 Science for Forensic Science) are covered by other A levels or qualifications. Details of entry requirements for each course can be viewed at

Access to Higher Education Diploma

  • We currently accept a pass or require an overall merit profile at the Access to HE Diploma but from 2017 entry we intend to make UCAS tariff offers using our 2017 entry requirements. Any combination of overall grades achieved within the relevant tariff points will be acceptable unless otherwise stated within the offer.

Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma

  • For the majority of our courses we currently accept 120 tariff points from the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma regardless of grade but when achieved from 2017 onwards offers will be based on the graded UCAS points.

Other qualifications

As each application is considered on an individual basis students who have additional UCAS Tariff qualifications (ASDAN, Music, Drama, Sports Leadership etc.) should ensure these are noted on their UCAS form.

Entry requirements and Offers

  • GlyndŵrUniversity will make offers based on combinations of the following: A levels, AS levels (when not studied at A level), the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma, Access to HE Diploma, BTECs, Cambridge Technicals, CACHE, Extended Project and any other relevant level 3 tariff-bearing qualification.
  • Where we have not included a qualification which is being studied as part of the offer, we will continue to take additional qualifications into account at results confirmation.
  • GlyndŵrUniversity will make offers using the following tariff points (where applicable):

Entry level / 2016/17 entry / 2017/18 entry
