Physical Education Terminology –Winter Activities
Cardiorespiratory fitness-refers to the ability of your heart, lungs and organs to consume, transport and utilize oxygen.
Muscular strength-is the maximum amount of force a muscle can produce in a single effort.
Muscular endurance-is the ability of the muscle to continue to perform without fatigue.
Flexibility--is the ability to bend and move the joints through the full range of motion.
Healthful body composition- is a high ratio of lean tissue to fat tissue in the body.

Fitness Skills- 1-6
1. AGILITY-ability to rapidly change the position of the body
2. BALANCE-ability to keep from falling when a person is in a still position or moving
3. COORDINATION-ability to use the senses together with body parts during movement
4. REACTION TIMEtime it takes a person to move-
5. SPEED-ability to move quickly
6. POWER-ability to combine strength and speed
MAXIMUM HEART RATE- 220 - your age = maximal heart rate.
RESTING HEART RATE- Your heart rate at rest
PRINCIPLE OF OVER LOAD-The principle of overload states that a greater than normal stress or load on the body is required for training adaptation to take place.
Flexibility-Capable of being bent repeatedly without injury or damage.
Forward roll a gymnastic movement in which the body is turned heels over head with the back of the neck resting on the ground-
Muscle control-being able to target individual muscles when exercising
Tip up-a tip up is a balance move that you practice before doing a hand stand it is done by squatting down with your legs outside your arms and arms straight under your shoulders leaning your weight forward and resting your knees on your elbows as they bend forward and you tip your hips up and your forehead and the front part of your head to a 3 point stance on the mat upside down hands and head on the mat.
Spotting-in gymnastics or weightlifting it is a person that assists you in your attempting of a skill
Straddle-In a straddle, legs are separated with neither leg being forward or backward of the other.
Pike- In a pike a gymnast is bent only at the hips. Sit on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you.
Press- A press to handstand is a basic skill in which the gymnast starts in a standing or seated position, and slowly rolls up into a handstand position.
Dive forward roll- A dive roll is an acrobatic stunt that begins with a horizontal forward diving motion and results in a forward roll
Forward momentum-means the amount of motion occurring in something that is moving, or the force that drives something forward to keep it moving
Headstand- a position in gymnastics or yoga in which the body is balanced upside down on the head, usually using the hands for support
Handstand-an act of balancing the body on the hands with the legs straight up in the air
Free throw-an opportunity to shoot at the basket unhindered by the opposing players, awarded to a player who has been fouled
Lay-up-a shot with one hand from a point close to the basket, in which a player shoots the ball toward the basket, often off the backboard
Man defense-is a type of defensive tactic used in team sports such as football, and basketball, in which each player is assigned to defend and follow the movements of a single player on offense
Zone defense-is a type of defense, used in team sports, which is the alternative to man-to-man defense; instead of each player guarding a corresponding player on the other team, each defensive player is given an area known as a "zone" to cover
Technical foul- technical foul (also informally known as a "T" or a "Tech") is any infraction of the rules penalized as a foul which does not involve physical contact during the course of play between opposing players on the court, or is a foul by a non-player.
Personal foul-a foul called in certain games, as basketball or football, for illegal body contact or rough, unsportsmanlike play.
