Adjunct Faculty Non-Teaching (AJ002, Position #J00002) Position Description

IMPORTANT NOTES ON NON-TEACHING ADJUNCT POSITIONS:

  • Non-teaching adjunct positionsmust meet both the “job basis exemption test” and the “salary basis exemption test”*under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) - see page 2 for FLSA information. The respective HR Consultant must approve the position (in eJobs) prior to posting of the position.
  • Under the FLSA, a non-teaching adjunct faculty member must be paid at least $913per week, unless the employee’s primary work is practicing law or medicine. HR’s approval is required to ensure compliance with the FLSA requirements noted above.
  • In order to comply with IRS guidelines, the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Manpower Control Program, and VCU guidelines, non-teaching adjunct faculty are not permitted to work more than twenty-nine (29) hours per week, on average, and no more than 1480 hours (no more than 70.63 FTE) during the 12-month Standard Measurement Period of May 1st to April 30th.
  • Under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), adjunct faculty are not permitted to accept additional employment in another part-time, non-benefited position at VCU unless authorized to do so. If at any time during the Standard Measurement Period it is determined that the projected hours might exceed this hourly limit, the faculty member’s hours must be reduced and/or their adjunct position may be subject to earlier termination.

1. DESCRIPTION OF THE JOB (INCLUDE MISSION/GOAL OF UNIT AND CHIEF PURPOSE OF POSITION)
The Director of the Rams Institute will perform advanced-level responsibilities that focus on intermediate to long-range program issues affecting activities and services development, planning, delivery, monitoring, and evaluation. This position will also coordinate, plan, develop, implement, promote, and evaluate the Rams Institute as it relates to attracting top students for future enrollment.The Directorplays a critical role by spearheading all outreach and program recruitment efforts in order to form a high quality, talented, and diverse cohort for each program. The Director cultivates a focused integrated learning experience that helps students reach their educational, personal, and professional aspirations. This position will enable students to contribute to and be a part of a deeply diverse campus community, while also promoting the School nationally and internationally and encouraging program participants to apply to a degree program. This professional position will train, coach, mentor, and supervise the Rams Institutefaculty, teaching assistants, and counseling team. The Director will ensure that the team of counselors provides a safe environment and superior quality experience for each participant. The Director will take recommendations from department chairs to select suitable faculty for placement in summer course offerings.
The Director of the Rams Instituteis responsible for developing and delivering a successful annual summer residency program for high school students. This entails supervising 12 faculty, 12 teaching assistants, 3 Senior Counselors, 20+ Counselors, and approximately 100-125 high school students. This also involves establishing a trusted relationship between the Director, parents of incoming and prospective students, and the VCU community. The Director will lead the faculty and team of counselors in overseeing the students 24-hours a day during the three-week program. The Rams Institute program offers high school students an opportunity to explore their interests in the fine arts, math, sciences, humanities, and languages.
2. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
-- Establishes a clear set of procedures and expectations for the faculty, teaching assistants, senior staff and counselors to follow and provides training and mentoring.
- Develops academic programming including weekend adventures based on interest and demand.
- Identifies and hires appropriately credentialed faculty, teaching assistants and counseling staff.
- Monitors trends and interest across the disciplines and reacts by changing curricula and offering new courses.
- Works closely with department chairs to ensure that academic quality and adequate rigor is disseminated in the classroom.
- Establishes a clear set of expectations for students and clearly communicates such expectations to their parents.
-- Serves as the primary contact to VCU conference services and resolves all issues that arise in the dining hall and residence hall relating to the needs of high school students, i.e., behavior, special needs, privacy issues and communication of rules and policies.
-- Is sensitive to the emotional and social needs of high school students, their parents and establishes a clear set of personal conduct expectations for students.
-- Immediately responds to all emergency situations in accordance with University policies and procedures and determines what and when to communicate pertinent issues with parents, the Director's supervisor, Dean's Office, student affairs and/or VCU Police.
-- Serves as an ambassador of the University to prospective students and their parents, high school teachers and guidance counselors.
-- Diplomatically and effectively communicates with parents throughout the year on a range of issues from student behavior to safety on campus both leading up to and during their child's attendance at the Rams Institute.
- Conducts thorough performance evaluations of all employees in order to determine future hiring opportunities.
- Conducts a survey among participants at completion of program and includes analysis in annual report to supervisor.
3. QUALIFICATIONS (LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE)
Required:
Master's degree in Education or a related field is required, and/or professional training and experience that equates to a graduate degree. Significant training and work experience with PK-12 students is required. Previous experience working in a summer Rprogram as well as international experience teaching PK-12 students is preferred. Fluency in both written and spoken English. A strong understanding of various learning styles among PK-12 students is expected. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills including timely responsiveness to queries, and significant experience and ability to work in a diverse environment and with students from all backgrounds. Demonstrated enthusiasm for work with students in an exploratory and cross disciplinary setting. Must acquire knowledge of pertinent VCU and federal policies impacting minor students on campus.

Job Basis Exemption Tests

Executive Exemption

To qualify for the executive employee exemption, all of the following tests must be met:

  • The employee must be compensated on a salary basis (as defined in the regulations) at a rate not less than $913 per week [whether part-time or full-time];
  • The employee’s primary duty must be managing the enterprise, or managing a customarily recognized department or subdivision of the enterprise;
  • The employee must customarily and regularly direct the work of at least two or more other full-time employees or their equivalent; and
  • The employee must have the authority to hire or fire other employees; or the employee’s suggestions and recommendations as to the hiring, firing, advancement, promotion, or any other change of status of other employees must be given particular weight.

Administrative Exemption

To qualify for the administrative employee exemption, all of the following tests must be met:

  • The employee must be compensated on a salary basis (as defined in the regulations) at a rate not less than $913 per week;
  • The employee’s primary duty must be the performance of office or non-manual work directly related to the management or general business operations of the employer or the employer’s customers; and
  • The employee’s primary duty includes the exercise of discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance.

Professional Exemption

To qualify for the learned professional employee exemption, all of the following tests must be met:

  • The employee must be compensated on a salary basis (as defined in the regulations) at a rate not less than $913 per week;
  • The employee’s primary duty must be the performance of work requiring advanced knowledge, defined as work which is predominantly intellectual in character and which includes work requiring the consistent exercise of discretion and judgment;
  • The advanced knowledge must be in a field of science or learning; and
  • The advanced knowledge must be customarily acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction.

To qualify for the creative professional employee exemption, all of the following tests must be met:

  • The employee must be compensated on a salary basis (as defined in the regulations) at a rate not less than $913 per week; and
  • The employee’s primary duty must be the performance of work requiring invention, imagination, originality, or talent in a recognized field of artistic or creative endeavor.

Computer Employee Exemption

To qualify for the computer employee exemption, the following tests must be met:

  • The employee must be compensated either on a salary basis (as defined in the regulations) at a rate not less than $913 per week or, if compensated on an hourly basis, at a rate not less than $27.63 an hour;
  • The employee must be employed as a computer systems analyst, computer programmer, software engineer, or other similarly skilled worker in the computer field performing the duties described below; and
  • The employee’s primaryduty must consist of:
  • The application of systems analysis techniques and procedures, including consulting with users, to determine hardware, software, or system functional specifications;
  • The design, development, documentation, analysis, creation, testing, or modification of computer systems or programs, including prototypes, based on and related to user or system design specifications;
  • The design, documentation, testing, creation, or modification of computer programs related to machine operating systems; or
  • A combination of the aforementioned duties, the performance of which requires the same level of skills.

Salary Basis Exemption Test

For employees to be considered exempt, they must be paid on a salary basis of not less than $913each week, regardless of whether their employment status is full-time or part-time. This salary requirement does not apply to employees whose primary duties are teaching, practicing law or medicine, or outside sales.
