A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE DEATH OF CHIEF JUDGE BEN GEER ALDERMAN, JR., SUMMARY COURT OF CLARENDON COUNTY, AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the Senate are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Judge Ben Geer “B.G.” Alderman, Jr. of Sumter on Friday, October 1, 2004; and

Whereas, Judge Alderman was the beloved husband of Ann Taylor Alderman and was the son of Ben Geer Alderman, Sr. and Mary Jones Alderman; and

Whereas, together with his wife, he raised a daughter, Guerry Alderman Kirkland, of Charleston, and a son, Ben Geer Alderman III, of Mt. Pleasant; and

Whereas, he was also the proud grandfather of four grandchildren: Patricia Ann Kirkland, Bailey Henry Kirkland, Mary Geer Kirkland, and Ben Geer Alderman IV; and

Whereas, Judge Alderman is also survived by three bothers: Dr. Robert L. Alderman of Roanoke, Virginia, David C. Alderman of Litchfield Beach, South Carolina, and Dr. James F. Alderman of Charlotte, North Carolina, and a sister, Mary Geer Clark of Roanoke, Virginia; and

Whereas, Judge Alderman graduated from Manning High School and Wake Forest University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business; and

Whereas, he had a diverse career path serving as a school teacher, manager of the Alderman Wood Preserving Company, owner of Geddings Hardware, and foundering owner of The Alderman Trust, in addition to being appointed Chief Magistrate Judge of Clarendon County; and

Whereas, Judge Alderman worked to strengthen the surrounding community throughout his lifetime; and

Whereas, he was a member of the Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce, the Sumter Board of Realtors, the National Bank of South Carolina Manning Advisory Board, the South Carolina Public Service Authority, the Children’s Bureau of South Carolina, and Clarendon Memorial Hospital; and

Whereas, Judge Alderman served as chairman of the Santee Cooper Dams Committee and was a member and past president of the Manning Rotary Club; and

Whereas he was a faithful member of the Manning United Methodist Church; and

Whereas, he was named the 1999 Clarendon County Business Person of the Year, and given the Rotary Club’s Paul Harris Fellow Award in recognition of the many aspects of his community service; and

Whereas, Judge Ben Geer “B.G.” Alderman, Jr., earned the respect and admiration of all who knew and loved him and the South Carolina Senate is proud to honor the many contributions that he made to his community and state. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate hereby express their profound sorrow on the death of Chief Judge Ben Geer Alderman, Jr., Summary Court of Clarendon County, and extend their deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ann Taylor Alderman of Manning.
