Practical Application Project: Mentor
My practical application was with a mentor on mine that I actually met at the beginning of this semester. His name is Don Carpenter, he was the former CFO of Waste Management and is my teacher for accounting. He is one of the humblest and outgoing professor you will ever meet. Accounting as a major has been on my radar and since Mr. Carpenter has been teaching me about accounting. The funny thing is I actually am not the best with accounting and needed a lot of help, which is why Mr. Carpenter became my mentor. I would always be going into his office asking for help on homework or concepts we were learning in class. We would always start with asking how each other was, then talking about why and how he got into accounting. He talked about how I can improve my score in class by coming into his office more and attending the SI sessions that were offered. This ended up helping out a ton and I ended up making an 88 on the last test that I took. I started to ask more and more questions about accounting and it became apparent to me that it was the top major that was ranked top in country. I continued to go to Don’s office and ask questions about things related to accounting and what job opportunities were available after undergrad. We developed a relationship through these meetings and he has become a mentor to me through this. He has help me understand accounting together and we at the same time are able to talk about with each other anything that is going on. It has been meaningful to me to have a professor not only care about how well I’m doing in accounting, but also was concerned about how my life is going and my relationship with God. This type of

mentorship Mr. Carpenter and I had was something that I needed. He would help with accounting and help me with my life in general and the future that was ahead of me. Having someone be able to give me great advice on what to do with my life is anything I could ever want and a blessing from God. Professor Carpenter as helped me find my calling into the professional sells major because he thinks my people skills and determined mined set will be equivalent to what the professional sells people are looking for. It is so surreal to hear someone tell that you’d be good at something and that you would successful in that field. The feeling of being able to sell to people items that they are need of is something that is very rewarding and is one of the driving forces on why pro-sells sounds like the major for me. Also being able to talk to others about a certain product that is useful to them sounds like actual fun. I couldn’t be more thankful to have Mr. Carpenter as my professor and my life advisor.
