English 9 Honors Summer Reading
StrongsvilleHigh School
Students entering English 9 Honors must read and complete work over the summer. Materials needed include the Bantam Classic Abridged Version of The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas and a 2-subject notebook.
- Novel: All students are required to read the Bantam Classic Abridged Version of The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. Do not read another version of the novel as different abridged versions include different characters and storylines. Please get and begin reading the novel early in the summer as it is long and detailed.
- Chapter Notes: Students are to take detailed notes on each chapter. Read for mastery, not just for pleasure. These can be written as bullet points in one section of your 2-subject notebook.
- It is best to do this while reading the novel.
- Character Identifications: There are many characters in this novel, including multiple aliases of the Count. In the second section of the 2-subject notebook, students are to keep track of every character by including who the character is, his or her relationships in the novel, and an overall summary of his or her contributions to the plot. For main characters, your identification should be 2 paragraphs and for minor characters, a fewdetailed sentencesunless marked with * which means to write a complete paragraph.
- It is best to do this after reading the novel.
The chapter notes and character identifications should be completed by the first day of school and will be collected within the first week or two. Students will be participating in a graded discussion, will take a major objective test and an essay test during the first week or two of the year along with other small assignments throughout first quarter. Students will be required to prepare a speech based on the characters in The Count of Monte Cristo during the first quarter.
