Mathematics for Early Learners / 2 / Strong number sense developed in the early years is a key building block of learning arithmetic in the primary grades. What do you need to know and do to ensure math readiness in young children? Learn what you as a provider can do to help your children develop the mathematical skills they will need to be ready for school. Make math fun and engaging!
Not By Chance: Quality in Practice for the Early Childhood Indicators of Progress (ECIPs) / 8 / This training is focused on the Early Childhood Indicators of Progress, Minnesota's Early Learning Standards. The ECIPs offer the latest research on common developmental expectations for children from birth to age five and a framework for helping them get there. The learning tools give an understanding of child development, strategies for encouraging healthy development, and highlights community-wide responsibility for supporting young children. The preschool tool is centered on six main developmental areas: Social and Emotional Development, Approaches to Learning, Language and Literacy Development, Creativity and the Arts, Cognitive Development, and Physical and Motor Development. The infant/toddler tool is centered on four main developmental areas: Social and Emotional Development, Language Development and Communication, Cognitive Development, and Physical and Motor Development.
Supervising for Safety / 6 / This class introduces basic best practices related to health, wellness and safety on a program-wide level. Areas of focus include: safe sleep, emergency preparedness, prevention of and responding to illness and injury, emergency response and evacuation, supervision of teens/adults in the program, indoor/outdoor supervision, recognizing signs of child abuse and neglect, and supervising while interacting.
Overview of Curriculum / 8 / This four session series focuses on early childhood curriculum and the domains of development, elements of effective curriculum, and the role of authentic assessment in gathering information about children's development and in adapting curriculum to meet children's needs. The class has been developed to address training requirements associated with Parent Aware.
Assessment: Gathering and Using Information / 8 / Assessment is a familiar buzzword in the child care and education field but not always easily understood and practiced. Participants in this training will practice the assessment cycle of gathering information and making decisions based on that information. The purpose of gathering and using information is to support children and families.
Child Development and Guidance / 4 / Meets the 4 hour preservice Child Development/Behavior Guidance training requirement for Family Child Care Providers. This training curriculum will address key facts about early brain development; define social emotional development and describe how it unfolds in the context of relationships; examine how environments affect children's behaviors; and identify some concrete strategies for preventing behavioral challenges.
SEEDS of Early Literacy / 17.5 / Presented in 7 sessions (each is 2.5 hours in length), SEEDS of Learning for School Readiness starts by demonstrating how to evaluate and create a classroom that is rich with opportunity for developing literacy skills. Since one of the primary components is the teacher, this curriculum also shows how very busy teachers with many children can seamlessly integrate meaningful literacy-rich exchanges throughout the day.
During the 7 sessions, participants will also learn how to make the most of a Read Aloud, how to increase the number of (positive!) verbal exchanges with children, and how to engage a child’s family in creating a literacy rich environment at home.
Working with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Families / 2 / In order to help foster cross-cultural relationships with the children and families they serve, this training provides participants with background knowledge of immigrant families and the specific challenges they face. In addition, the workshop provides research on the importance of home language on early learning. Educators will learn effective ways to support home language and culture while also promoting English learning and school readiness.
Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Syndrome (SUIDS) / 2 / This course will cover the definitions as well as prevention strategies for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abusive Head Trauma. SIDS is the leading cause of death in infants. Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abusive Head Trauma is a form of child abuse and describes the serious injuries that can occur when a young child is severely or violently shaken. This training is required for those caring for infants. This course does not meet the DHS criteria for family day care providers.
Introduction to Caring for Young Children / 8 / This 8-hour series-based course provides an introduction to caring for children in groups. Information includes: how to provide safe and healthy environments and activities;what is most important for children to know and be able to do for success in school and in life; ways to support children and their families; and explore one's own beliefs about what children need.
