Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Describe the operation and control of a glass furnace.

Evidence requirements

1.1Glass furnace heating terminology is described.

Rangeterminology – combustion, perfect (stoichiometric) combustion, incomplete combustion, primary air flue gas analysis, excess oxygen analysis, oxidising flames, radiation, convection, conduction, electro-boost, burners.

1.2Furnace firing methods are identified and their operation described.

Rangemethods – gas and reversals, diesel.

1.3Furnace combustion air flow and exhaust control equipment are identified and their operation described.

Rangeequipment – flues, regenerators, stack, stack-breaker, dampers, electro static precipitator.

1.4Combustion process control parameters are identified, and the methods for controlling them are described.

Rangeprocess control parameters – furnace pressure, flue purging, in-glass temperature, above-glass temperature, in-block temperature, excess oxygen, gas flow, air flow, combustion air, bridgewall optical temperature.

1.5Furnace batch charging control parameters and their purpose are described.
