Building Trails Today for Tomorrow
May 28, 2014
First my apologies, there was no news letter for April.
Old and New Business:
The Kentucky Derby ride and lunch at the Sweetwater Regional Staging Area, Morrison’s Pond, was a great success. Before the ride got started one horse got loose, owner to remain nameless, and I caught him with an empty feed bag! There were over 20 riders and 10 non riders. Many of the riders came from Lakeside. They really enjoyed our river bottom ride. Everyone returned ready for a typical Kentucky Derby luncheon of Kentucky Hot Brown, Derby Pieand mint juleps. Many thanks to our pres. Diane as she did all the food prep the day before the ride.
Trails Maintenance and News:
The construction fence closing off the trail for the new Scripps Hospice has been moved. Scripps didn’t realize the problems and took immediate action to correct the problem, permanently.Thank you Scripps, you are the kind of good neighbor we need and appreciate!! And thanks to Bette Souza for interfacing with Scripps concerning this issue!!
The So. Side trail (fairy shrimp issue) permit has been approved. YES!!! Depending on dollars, fiscal yr. end for the county, the anticipated start for the fix is around June 9th.
The new trail and parking lot around the Province house has been approved.
Apparently there are hundreds of homeless people living in the river bottom area west of BonitaPlaza and near the Koa off of 2nd street in Chula Vista. You recall the fires etc. recently?
That’s part of the encampment. If you need to be in those areas, riding, biking etc. be very careful. We will bringthis issue to the County’s attention.
The trail thru Bonita Meadows, Proctor Valley Rd. west to BonitaHighlands, is very muddy and can be difficult to cross. The run off thru the little river crossing had gotten exponentially larger and mud suckie. We will be working with the County to find a solution (we think a bridge might be the best answer as then Mountain Bikers can cross the water).
If you ride a trail that needs major work done, please email Mark Kukuchek () and he will pass it on to the District One Supervisor’s office for consideration. If it’s something we can handle we’ll schedule a work party.
Membership:We now have 120 members. Thanks to Daryl and Sherry that’s a record!!
Sunshine Report:
