These weeks are combined because of the limited quantities of supplementary texts to be used. The texts used during this period are Reading and Study Skills by John Langan and The Longman Textbook Reader Compiled by Cheryl Novins. They are on reserve in the Learning Center itself or in the Library. Ask your instructor where to find them. Each assignment depends on which text you choose or which is available for your use. Read the following description of each assignment and then choose which you will do first. The supplementary texts must be used only in the Learning Center so extra time may be needed these two weeks.
Reading and Study Skills
Reading and Study Skills by John Langan contains a section concerned primarily with developing your comprehension, but also with increasing the number of words you can read per minute.
Part Six Rapid Reading and Comprehension, pp. 461-523, contains 10 reading selections to help the reader to build both comprehension and speed. Read all material in the introduction and do ALL 10 readings. Make your own chart demonstrating speed and comprehension to be included in your portfolio.
The Longman Textbook Reader
The Longman Textbook Reader contains six units from various college texts. You are to select one unit that will apply to whatever your major is and read and do all exercises for that unit. Check them with the instructor’s copy of the text.
