Keynote: “Climbing the Summit”, Fran Mainella, Clemson University Visiting Scholar

Fran Mainella was the first woman to serve as the Director of the National Park Service. Join her as she shares her

journey from summer playground counselor to National Park Service Director. She will share with you the challenges

and opportunities that arose during those times, and inspire you to have the courage to embrace risk in your own career.

Session 1: Identifying Developmentally Appropriate Programs for Ages 3-5

Pre-school children need activities that are often very different from children in elementary school. This session will provide an outline of the characteristics and interests of this age. Participants will engage in games and other activities that are necessary to an inviting program. Speaker: Rhonda Marino

Session 2: Programming Start to Finish

From concept to evaluation, a step by step approach to considering all aspects of putting a program together.

Session 3: Building Permits, Construction Zones … and Fairies?!

From moss-covered rooftops to mushroom cap tables, explore the tiny, magical world of fairies. Learn how fairy house building can enhance your outdoor education programs and events. Speaker: Lauri SoJourner

Session 4: Doing More ThroughPartnerships

Recreation Programmers are always asked to do more with less. Partnerships are a great way to provide more services on shrinking budgets. Participants will learn how to build and maintain effective partnerships and explore the true meaning of kumbaya. Speakers: Dolly Patton and Mike Teachy

Session 1: Identifying and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect, Part 1 of 2

As a mandatory reporter, you will learn how to recognize and report suspected child abuse and neglect; including maltreatment, physical abuse, neglect and sexual abuse. Learn how to question and respond to a child, conduct a minimal interview, document and report, contact authorities and parents, and follow-up in an appropriate and lawful manner. Learn about consequences of failure to report, immunity from liability and overviews of actual cases to help you understand how this process works to protect everyone involved. Session 2: Marketing for the Non-Marketer

Good marketing is critical to the success of your recreational business. Marketing has many dimensions, including market research and scheduling, relationships with the media, advertising, targeting, packaging, e-marketing, and why it is important to keep a photo library. Investing in a good marketing plan will generate a successful special event or program. This session will give the overview you need for a thriving and profitable marketing strategy. Session 3: Introduction to Archery

This session will introduce you to the sport of archery. Learn how to operate a safe recreational archery program & range, identify resources for equipment, and demonstrate safe shooting practices. Speaker: Kevin Strohmier

Session 4: Programming Special Events for Your Venues

Are you programming events that maximize the resources of your facilities?Too often events are created based on what's been successful elsewhere without taking into account the built-in resources, accommodations of current facilities. This session will explore how you can use your current resources and assets to create successful events.We will also cover targeting and building powerful sponsor partnerships. Session 2: Junior Naturalist - Interdisciplinary Environmental Education

The Junior Naturalist series at the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission uses an interdisciplinary approach to environmental education, providing children with the best possible set of tools for critically thinking about environmental problems and their solutions. This session will provide an overview of the curriculum, successes and suggestions from their pilot program, and strategies for implementing a similar program at your site. Session 3: Volunteer Management Boot Camp

This session will cover the basics of the volunteer management cycle concentrating on planning for volunteers and getting staff committed to the program. Participants will complete a needs analysis, write position descriptions, and discuss recruitment strategies and the importance of pairing up volunteers with the right positions within the department.

Session 4: I Wanna Be the Boss! Transitioning from Programmer to Supervisor

You love being a programmer, but maybe you can’t picture yourself as one for the rest of your career. Learn what can you be doing now to prepare yourself for upper management positions, so when the time is ready, you are too!

Real change happens in communities when stakeholders come together to form a common agenda. Learn how EarthForce can provide information and resources on the essential components which will drive your best results in including youth in relevant and educational projects within your agency and community. Hear success stories, and partnerships from the Charleston County area that can be used as impetus to see similar results in your area. Learn about Global Youth Service Day, local initiatives and how you can become involved. Speaker: Stacey Rafalowski

Session 2: Deciding What Programs Really Matter

Hear what fellow professionals consider to be the most important programs their agencies offer, and then take part in a lively “program auction” by bidding against your colleagues! You will learn what programs are valued by you and by other programmers, as well as new program ideas for your own community. Speaker: Pam Reidy

Session 3: Fast and Fun Daycamp Games

You’re “It” in this lively, active session featuring fast, furious and FUN group games that will be a huge hit at your summer day camps or agency team-building sessions. Minimal or “on-hand” supplies and equipment, and a healthy blend of energy and competitiveness are all that is needed to implement these activities. Learn techniques on how you can be an engaging facilitator to children of all ages. Speaker: Ralph Hayes

Session 4: It's Easy Being Green! Waste Free Event Planning

The waste generated at festivals can have a big impact on the environment. Learn how to reduce your waste at your event and work toward hosting a waste free event. Whether your event is large or small, there are changes you can make that will have a lasting impact on your community and the environment.

Take a Break Session 3: Bike Ride and Scavenger Hunt

8 person max. - Pre-register at check-in

Grab a helmet and bike, and a map with 6 riddles to solve and 6 objects to find. You'll ride within a 2-mile radius of park searching for the objects, and enjoying the crisp weather with friends. With all of the objects in hand, you will have a puzzle to solve. Prizes are awarded to the riders who correctly identify the most mystery sights along the route. There will be one combination check point / water station mid-way on the route. Speakers: SSP Park Rangers

Session 1: SC Arts Commission Resources for Local Arts Programmers

Let us help you develop or enrich a cultural arts component in your program! You will greatly benefit from this overview of grants, services and other opportunities from the SC Arts Commission, targeted to assist local arts programmers. Speaker: Rusty Sox

Session 2: All Natural Fun

Discover easy, low cost/no cost ideas for incorporating nature into your programs. Exploring nature is fun and easy to do, even if you don't have a naturalist on staff. Learn about several favorite, easy nature activities that you can do right away. Speaker: Jeanette Wells

Session 3: Teens - What To Do With Them!

What do they like?What do they want to do? Well let’s find out! The Town of Cary developed a unique initiative which focuses on teen programming. Hear about their extensive teen volunteer program that has grown by leaps and bounds over the past few years. Find out what is working for them and perhaps discover techniques that might work for you! Speaker: Cindi King

Session 4: Walking Your Way to a Healthy Community

With levels of obesity on the rise, the importance of exercise for all ages has never been greater. You can get both adults and children moving in your community by creating unique and fun programming for everyone, regardless of fitness level. Learn how one city uses walking activities to help create a more healthy community.

Take a Break Session 4: Crash Course in Geocaching & Orienteering

20 person max. - Pre-register at check-in

This class is designed to teach the beginner about Geocaching, the outdoor treasure hunting game which uses GPS-enabled devices. Participants will navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. Learn about Orienteering, a race in wilderness navigation using a map and compass. It’s easy to learn and a fun way to exercise your body and mind as you enjoy the great outdoors Speakers: Alex Beck

Session 1: Arts Programs That Engage, Inspire and SUCCEED

Arts professionals from the South Carolina Arts Commission lead a discussion about strategies for planning successful arts programs. Bring your best examples of what’s worked and what hasn’t in your community, and discuss potential enhancement and solutions. Speaker: Susan DuPlessis

Session 2: The 5-Ingredient Fix to Imagineering Awesome Programs

Stuck in a rut, programming the same classes and activities season after season? This session will provide you with unique, challenging tools and techniques to re-invent and develop new and interesting programs from the "ingredients" you already have on hand. Think outside the box, add some new ingredients to the mix, and cook up some awesome new programs for your community. Speaker: Marianne Bower

Session 3: Picture Perfect Marketing

Learn tips of taking better photos to use to document your programs and events. Most photographers start their photographic journey taking photos at special events. Whether it’s a football game, a family fun day, or a festival concert, capturing the raw, spontaneous moments of these events is something all photographers aim to do. Session 4: Facilitating Team Challenge Programs

Do you want to learn some new and traditional team building activities that work with all ages? Are you looking for ways to get your group to cooperate, work together and be the best they can? This session will introduce several useful team building activities; provide discussion about the logical progression of activities and how to facilitate them. Session 1: Therapeutic Activities from All Angles

It is an important skill for a Therapeutic Recreation professional to learn how to effectively adapt ideas that can be modified to create new therapeutic recreational activities. This session will be jammed packed with recreation/activity ideas to implement into your own Therapeutic Recreation Departments. Get all of your participants moving and having fun, regardless of the ability level and specials need. In this session you will learn “what is adapting, why and how to adapt an activity/game. Session 2: TRACK Trails… a national network to get Kids in Parks

The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation’s Kids in Parks program has partnered with several land management agencies to build a network of self-guided, brochure-led hiking trails (and other types of trails) designed to get kids and families “un-plugged”, outdoors and re-connected to nature. During this presentation, participants will learn about: the history of the Kids in Parks program, the program’s network of TRACK Trails and Nature Trail Disc Golf Courses, how data collection and assessment measures have been built into the program, and the steps in the process for installing a TRACK Trail or similar trail system at their site. Session 3: Boomers: Changing the Way We Age!

We have heard about them for years and they are here. Boomers are now retiring and looking for something to do. Do you know how to attract them? Do you know what they want? Your department needs to be ready for this invasion and the diverse opportunities that are opening for all aspects of recreation programming from athletics to senior centers. The Town of Cary has a successful 55+ program that has been attracting Boomers for several years. Learn what has worked in their community while brainstorming what would work in yours! Session 4: Vision Boards, a Treasure Map For Success

Vision Boards are a way to visually express your goals, dreams and aspirations. Learn about the process of creating a vision board, and then create your very own desk-top version to take home. Speaker: Susie Goudy

Block VIII: 10:30 - 11:45 a.m.

Session 1: Exploring Nature’s Pathways

Going outside and experiencing nature in itself is a wonderful activity. Take this experience to another level by turning it into an active experience. Join our guide, Jeanette Wells, as she gives you some examples of how to capture the imagination and creativity of participants by giving them a particular pursuit when involved in a nature walk.

Session 2: Programming Trends and Practices

Participants will be provided information on historic and current recreational programming trends, and will learn about valuable resources (e.g., journals, networking, professional publications) that can be used to stay abreast of these trends. Learn about methods for identifying and successfully implementing trends appropriate for your agency.
