Hainesville Emergency Management Agency reminds you to take time now to review your family's emergency preparedness plan and create a Winter Preparedness Checklist. It'll help you prepare your home and automobile for cold-weather hazards. A few things to consider:
Winter Storms: Before the Storm
Though winter storms can be difficult to predict far in advance, it is possible to know when they are most likely to occur, to give yourself and your family adequate time to prepare for severe winter weather. When a winter storm hits, you want to have the following ready:
- The ability to get weather forecasts and storm updates as they are released.
- Emergency supplies to keep you and your family warm and safe during a storm.
- Home preparations, including for your pipes, roof and indoor comfort.
- Car preparations, including antifreeze and ice removal equipment.
Weather Forecast
You'll want to be able to receive all of the latest weather updates during a winter storm, which means you'll need more than one reliable source of weather information. We recommend the following:
- Purchase a NOAA Weather Radio, which broadcasts all of the latest weather updates as well as winter storm watches and warnings for your area.
- Make sure you have fresh batteries for your radio(s), in case your home loses power for an extended period of time.
Emergency Supplies
If you know a winter storm will arrive in your area soon, make sure you have the following ready, especially in the case of a severe winter storm:
- Firewood, if you have a fireplace.
- Food that is non-perishable, if you lose power.
- Emergency equipment such as generators and flashlights tested and ready for use.
- Water for drinking and cooking, collected in bottles in case your pipes freeze.
- Make sure to charge your mobile phone, laptop and other mobile device batteries.
Fall Back! Sunday, November 4th Daylight Savings Time Ends. Turn your clock back 1 hour!

October is Fire Safety Month.
October 7-13, 2012 is National Fire Prevention Week. This week is used to remind us of what we can do to not only prevent fires, but also what we should do if a fire occurs. Refreshing ourselves with good practices should not only be done during this week but performed throughout the year. Here are three of the many fire safety tips found at the National Fire Protection Associations website.
- Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors at least once a month.
- Review your fire escape plan which should include a family meeting site outside.
- Clean your dryer vent regularly (In 2006 nearly 18,000 fires were attributed to clogged vents).
Visit the National Fire Association website at: to learn what you can do to prevent fires. There is also a section on Halloween Safety, please check it out!
