It’s summer in St. Louis and the heat is on the way. Time has flown by this year. The All-Star break is just around the corner. It’s hard to believe the baseball season is almost half over already. The Army Birthday Ball celebration has already taken place and Independence Day is at the end of the week…
The Gateway Chapter’s spring and summer has been very eventful so far. We had one of our most successful Leadership Awards Banquets to date. The quality of the solders and students improve each year.
I wanted to take a moment and reach out to all of our members. As our activities increase, it becomes even more important for everyone to speak up and let us know what’s going on in the region and how our membership is participating in activities to support the Army and our soldiers. Please keep us in the loop and send us any ideas that you might have about the chapter or even the newsletter at .

The Army Fires Symposium and Exposition welcomes all AUSA members, employees or consultants of AUSA Member companies, military and civilian government personnel, invited guests, and non-members that are interested or have a contact with the AUSA or the Army.
Registration fee per individual is $400 for government personnel (active duty military, and government employees, does not apply to contractors), $700 for Sustaining Members (employees of an AUSA Sustaining Member company) and $1000 for non-members (all others, including AUSA corporate members and individual members). The fee will increase to $450, $750 and $1050, respectively, after COB 8 July 2008. / Military Appreciation Day at Busch Stadium
It’s that time again! Come to Busch Stadium on Saturday, August 2nd at 3:00 PM to celebrate the annual military day at the ball park and root on the Cardinals to another victory. We are expecting the soldiers from Ft. Leonard Wood to begin arriving at 3:00 PM and we will greet them with food and beverages for the 6:15 start of the game.
We are also looking for volunteers to help staff the tables to greet and serve our brothers and sisters. Volunteers should arrive at 2:00 PM. Please contact LTC Jaime Torres (Ret) via e-mail at if you would like to help out.
First Female 4 Star Army General Nominated
LTG Ann E Dunwoody has been nominated to serve as the head of the Army’s Supply Arm after 33 years of service. "This is an historic occasion for the Department of Defense and I am proud to nominate Lt. Gen. Ann Dunwoody for a fourth star," said Defense Secretary Gates. The Senate must approve the nomination.

Wozniak Industries / Scott Air Force Base – ASF Makeover
The Gateway Chapter recently adopted a room as the Scott Air Force Base Aero-Medical Staging Facility which is used as a temporary home for wounded warriors as the return to CONUS for further treatment or ETS. Dan Schoenekase, V.P. of Military/Civilian Relations, led the effort to make over the lobby/TV room area of the facility to make the wounded warriors feel more at home and more comfortable during their stay.
As seen in this "before" picture, the facility was very stark like a typical government facility and provided very little comfort. VA Hospital or Government facility seating and surrounding furniture did not provide a nurturing or relaxing environment for the warriors. The chapter replaced all of the furniture with leather sofas and chairs, real wood bookcases, table w/chairs, coffee table, and end tables and decorations to make those passing through feel more at home. The stark lighting was supplemented with incandescent light. The chapter purchased a new HD LCD TV, HD antennae, Blu-Ray DVD player and Nintendo Wii. The total cost of the project was approx $5,000 and over 100 man hours were put into the project to repaint, install the border and bring in the furniture.
As hard as it is to believe, this is the same space as the "before" picture. Except for the "Nurse Manager 168" sign on the wall, the area does not even resemble a hospital let alone a government medical facility. Every wounded warrior who has passed through the facility has praised the new room and said how much it has helped provide a comfortable area for them during their transition periods.
The dedication ceremony was held on 5/9/08 at the facility. An AUSA wall plaque was hung that carries a mounted AUSA medal and a note from the chapter thanking the warriors for their service and what they have given for their country. / Members in the News
ST. LOUIS, June 27, 2008 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] has been awarded a $14.9 million contract by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory to develop and mature technologies required to enable airborne electronic attack from long distances, filling the stand-off electronic attack role. The contract includes systems engineering studies focusing on potential pod installation on the B-52H aircraft, as the designated demonstration airframe. This effort will advance the technology required for the planned Core Component Jammer (CCJ).
