To be eligible for this position you must:

  • Be an enrolled UC Berkeley undergraduate or graduate student
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

Essay guidelines

The essay question provides you the opportunity to share with us important information about you that might not be evident from of the application. The Office of Student Development appreciates the contributions each staff member makes to our inclusive residential and academic communities. This question seeks to determine an applicant’s experience, achievements, interests, and potential to contribute to the diversity and vitality of these communities.

Please apply the following guidelines:

  • Type the answer to the question and attach to the application packet. You need to submit 3 copies of the essay.
  • In the upper right-hand corner of each essay, please type your initials (not your full name) and your SID #, and note the applicable position and the question you are answering.
  • Limit your response to two (2) pages in length.
  • Answer the question directly and use specific examples.
  • All work must your own original writing
  • Essay should be typed in 12 point Times New Roman font, with 1.5 line spacing

Evaluation guidelines

The resume and essay provides the selection committee with important insight into your qualifications for the tutor position. Your overall application will be scored according to the following criteria, so be sure to highlight as many of these areas as possible in your resume and essay.

  1. Diversity and Inclusion: experience working in diverse environments with persons of different backgrounds, including ability, income, race/ethnicity, religion, and other identities
  2. Administrative and Organizational Skills: time management, experience planning and implementing activities and programming, ability to balance multiple tasks
  3. Interpersonal/Communication Skills: experience working in interpersonal and group situations, ability to give and receive constructive feedback, ability to articulate ideas clearly and effectively
  4. Academic Engagement: strong grades or notable improvement in subject area; participation in honors societies or other groups in subject area (we will refer to your transcript for grade information)
  5. Teaching/Tutoring/Mentoring Experience: experience working with a teaching, tutoring, or mentoring program, particularly in the areas of chemistry, math, physics, or writing

tHE SELECTION PROCESS

Thursday, March 6 / Interview Offer Letters will be sent out by e-mail.

Wednesday, April 9 / Accept / decline response due by 5pm. You must respond or you will be dropped from the process.

THE iNTERVIEW

Successful applicants will be invited to an interview with members of the Academic Services staff. Tutor applicants will be required to give a short teaching presentation as part of the selection process. More details will be provided when you are invited for an interview.

Spring and Fall TRAINING

Candidates selected for the Academic Services Tutor position are required to participate in a paid internship of up to 30 hours during the spring semester. The spring internship is an essential part of preparation to undertake the duties of the position.The internship begins on Wednesday April 16, 2008 and ends on Saturday, May 3, 2008. It will include the following:

  • Mass hire: Wednesday April 16 5:00pm-7:00pm
  • 1st Staff Training Meeting: Wednesday, April 16 7:30pm-9:30pm
  • 2nd Staff Training Meeting: Wednesday, April 23 7:30pm-9:30pm
  • 3rd Staff Training Meeting: Wednesday, April 30 7:30pm-9:30pm
  • Training Workshop: Choose one of the three following Saturdays – April 19th, April 26th, or May 3rd
    10:00am – 5:00pm

Candidates also have additional Fall training. Required Fall 2008 training dates are:

  • Student Staff Training 9am-6pm ( approximately 1 week prior to opening Day)
  • Residence Hall Opening Days
  • Welcome Week

aCADEMIC SERVICES STAFF TRAINING EXEMPTION STATEMENT

Attending all training is mandatory. However, staff members with unusual circumstances may submit petitions to Michael Taylor, via email (), by 5pm Friday, May 30th, 2008. Candidates who do not petition for an exemption by May 30thand miss any of training will not be permitted to work as tutors with Academic Services.

JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Academic Services tutors provide drop-in tutorial services for students living in UC Berkeley’s residence halls. During regularly scheduled evening shifts, a team of Academic Services tutors assist residents with their coursework and assignments with the goal of developing academic skills that will enable students to succeed throughout their years at UC Berkeley. Tutorsare expected to work in one of the following four subject areas:

  • Chemistry (1A, 2A, 3A, 3B, 4A, 4B)
  • Math (1A, 1B, 16A, 32, 53, 54)
  • Physics (7A, 7B, 7C, 8A, 8B)
  • Writing (all undergraduate writing)

In addition to providing assistance during drop-in tutoring, tutors also provide support during welcome week events, mid-term review sessions, and final exam review sessions.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: demonstrated excellence in lower division courses relevant to tutoring discipline; excellent communication skills; friendliness and approachability; timely attention to administrative details; minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0; currently registered UC Berkeley graduate or undergraduate student

Preferred:Experience as a tutor, teacher, or mentor; experience planning programs; team oriented

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • The period of employment for this position commences the week of Wednesday April 16, 2008 and continues through the end of the 2008-2009 academic year.
  • Academic Services Tutors are paid a wage of $12.50 per hour and the position is classified as Assistant II.
  • Tutors work approximately 5-12 hours per week, depending on availability
  • All Academic Services Tutors must be currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate UC Berkeley students.
  • Active participation in staff orientation and training is required at the beginning of each semester. You must be able to attend all of training to accept this job.
  • During the academic year, Academic Services Tutors are expected to work between 4 and 10 hours per week, which includes drop-in tutoring, preparation time, and regularly scheduled staff meetings. All tutoring takes place in the evenings, Sundays through Thursdays, 8:00-10:00 pm, and may include holidays. Schedule is determined by the Tutoring Program Supervisors and Academic Program Coordinator based on needs of each subject and/or unit.
  • Academic Services Tutors are required to attend weekly staff meetings as part of ongoing training and professional development. Tutor staff meetings take place on Wednesday nights from 6:00-7:00 pm.
  • Academic Services Tutors are accountable to and supervised by the Tutoring Program Supervisor (student supervisor) of their subject with assistance from the Academic Program Coordinator.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory job performance evaluation by the Tutoring Program Supervisor

/ A. / Tutoring: Help students to become independent learners through tutoring.
  1. Assist students with problem sets, papers, and other subject-related coursework. Discuss difficult concepts and provide new approaches to understanding them
  2. Listen actively and provide clear explanations
  3. Create a comfortable, friendly atmosphere. Be approachable and willing to help students. Show enthusiasm for tutoring and the subject matter
  4. Introduce residents to study strategies and skills which will assist them with their coursework
  5. Be able to work both with individuals and small groups. Encourage and facilitate group study
  6. Provide drop-in tutorial services in a timely manner, beginning and ending on time. Notify supervisor when absent, tardy or swapping a shift

  1. Participate in mandatory spring training
  2. Attend weekly tutor meetings on Wednesdays from 6:00-7:00 p.m. during the 2008-2009 academic year
  3. Actively make contributions and share input at weekly staff meetings
  4. Prepare for weekly staff meetings by reading short assigned texts or writing short reflection essays on tutoring (approximately one hour per week, paid)
  5. Participate in peer observations of other tutors
  6. Meet individually at least twice per semester with the Tutoring Program Supervisor
  7. Meet individually at least once per semester with the Academic Program Coordinator

  1. Keep logs of tutoring contacts and submit them weekly
  2. Check and respond to e-mail from your supervisor, fellow tutors and students at least once per day
  3. Keep supervisor informed about tutoring activities. Promptly address all concerns with supervisor
  4. Follow through on supervisor requests in a timely manner. Submit timesheets, transcripts, etc. by set deadlines
  5. Seek formal and informal feedback on your performance from students. Have students complete evaluation forms at the middle and/or end of each semester. Complete an end-of-semester self-evaluation form and participate in job performance meetings with your supervisor
