UK CEREAL PATHOGEN VIRULENCE SURVEY
2009
The UK cereal pathogen virulence survey monitors changes in virulence of UK pathogen populations. The success of the survey depends very much upon the people who spare the time to send us samples for testing.
Due to a recent re-structuring within the Survey, we will no longer be collecting samples of each pathogen every year. This year we would appreciate samples of each of the following only:
Wheat à Yellow Rust
à Brown Rust
Barley à Mildew
àYellow Rust
à Brown rust
Samples are welcome from any variety. Should you observe unexpectedly high levels of infection in a variety that you would normally expect to be resistant, we would be particularly keen to receive a sample.
All samples are tested at NIAB (Cambridge). On page 2 you will find information on how to collect and package any samples, and where to send them. Please complete Page 3 and enclose it with any samples sent to us.

PACKAGING AND POSTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISEASE SAMPLES
Samples should ideally consist of 20 infected leaves (If a seedling, please send a whole plant).
PACKAGING
Mildew
Samples should consist of leaves with obviously live mildew, i.e. young sporulating pustules. Wrap in slightly dampened blotting paper and seal in a polythene bag, avoiding excess moisture. It is best not to pack the leaves tightly in the paper.
Yellow & Brown rust
Wrap sample in large succulent leaves, e.g. dock leaves or damp (not wet) tissue, and seal in a paper envelope. PLEASE DO NOT USE POLYTHENE BAGS.
POSTING
· Please complete Page 3 of this document, and enclose it along with the sample.
· Send samples by first-class post on the day of collection. Post early in the week, if possible, to avoid samples being in transit over the weekend.
