Dear Parents and Students,

RE: IMPORTANT 6TH GRADE ELECTIVE CHOICE

The Music and Drama department of the Telluride Intermediate School is pleased to announce that next year’s sixth grade students and parents will have a choice to make regarding their electives.

Students can choose one of the following options for the 2016-2017 school year:

1.  Instrumental music (concert band): This twice weekly, full-year class, taught by Mrs. Muckerman, will include group instruction on one of the following instruments (chosen by the student):

Flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, percussion (includes glockenspiel, snare drum and bass drum).

*Parents will be responsible for renting or purchasing an instrument (more details on this included), and students will have at-home practice throughout the year.

2.  Guitars & Keyboards, taught by Mr. Gillett.

After a brief introduction, students will pick one or the other to learn and develop. Students will perform in TIS concerts, but the main focus will be a collaboration with the drama students in 6th grade. By the end of the year, we will produce a musical played, sung and acted by 6th graders.

*Students choosing guitar will want their own instrument.

3.  Drama, taught by Mrs. Watkins:

Students will develop the next level of theater art skills. They’ll apply these to an end of year collaboration with the guitar and keyboard students.

Please discuss these options with your child, complete the attached form and return it to Ms. Shelley no later than Friday, May 27th.

If you have any questions regarding the instrumental music program specifically, please contact Rhonda Muckerman at .

Thank you for your prompt response.

Sincerely,

Tuck Gillett

Rhonda Muckerman

Angela Watkins

ALL INCOMING 6TH GRADERS MUST CHOOSE AN ELECTIVE!

INSTRUMENT RENTAL/PURCHASE INFORMATION FOR CONCERT BAND CLASS

1.  TO RENT AN INSTRUMENT:

There are several, reputable, area music stores that rent band instruments:

Roper Music, Grand Junction: 1-800-540-3272. You can go on-line to ropermusic.com and click the “instruments” tab. Go to “on-line rental application.” Fill it out, and someone from the store will call you to arrange for your rental. They will also bring the instrument to the school in September, for your convenience.

Montrose Music Store: 970-249-5499

Katzin Music Store, Durango: 970-259-2211

Most instruments (except for saxophones) rent for as little as $25/month, and if you decide to keep the instrument then your rental fees will be applied to the purchase price of the instrument. If your child does not want to continue playing after the school year, you are under no obligation to purchase the instrument: simply return it to the store. Parents must call one of the above listed stores (or a store of your choosing) in order to rent an instrument before the school year begins.

*If your child wishes to play percussion, please make sure you rent a “bell kit with snare pad.”

2.  TO PURCHASE AN INSTRUMENT:

You may purchase an instrument from any of the above stores, or go on-line to any number of web-sites. The Woodwind and the Brasswind (www.wwbw.com) has been around for a long time and carries many good instrument brands, including Yamaha, Selmer, Gemeinhardt, Emerson, Buffet, Bach, and others. If you are purchasing a percussion kit, make sure you purchase a “bell kit with snare pad.”

3.  TO RENT AN INSTRUMENT FROM THE SCHOOL:

We have a limited number of older instruments available from the school to rent for a fee of $75/year.

*Those students wishing to play the baritone will rent from the school, as music stores typically do not carry these instruments in their inventory.
