SEATTLE AQUARIUMFIELD TRIP (15 points)

Pier 59, Alaskan Way (at the foot of Pike Place Hillclimb)

I'm giving you this question first so you can think about it as you go through the exhibits at the Aquarium.
What is your favorite animal here?
Describe how it moves (if it does); how and what it eats; what’s its habitat and its ecological role in the community, i.e., describe its niche in its ecosystem.
Your short paper should include info you gather from a published sourcewhich is not a textbook or encyclopedia. Include a citation for your source. It must be typed. Due March 16. - worth 10 points

READ THE LABELS and CARDS NEXT TO POOLS and TANKS TO HELP ANSWER THE QUESTIONS.

I.LIFE ON THE EDGE tide pools

a. Touch and compare animals in the 2 LIFE ON THE EDGE pools. Find an animal you don’t recognize and identify it using the plastic information cards.

Name:

b. Name 5 animals that are mobile and state their method of locomotion..

c. Name 3 animals that are sessile (attached to one location)and tell how they gather food.

  1. Octopus and jellies.

Compare and contrast the lifestyles of these organisms.

III.Microscopic organisms – plankton

Describe/draw 2 types of microscopic organisms that are being projected on the wall near the octopus tank.

If there is no plankton being exhibited, describe one of the exhibits on the table.

IV.Reef Exhibit -

List 1 organism that is a not fish and explain its role in the coral reef system.

Identify two coral reef fish that live in the same type of habitat but occupy different niches. Describe how the niche of each fish is different from the other.

See next pg. for more space

V.Seahorse exhibit

What is one memorable aspect to this exhibit?

MOVE ON TO THE NEXT BUILDING

VI.Shore exhibit and shallow pool.

Spend some time observing these exhibits. Can you find particular adaptations in these animals that make them particularly successful? If the birds are not available, look at the photographs. Identify and draw the legs and beaks of 2 different birds. Speculate how the form of these features relates to the lifestyle and niche each bird occupies, .e.g., what and how do they eat?

VII.Salmon and People exhibit:

What are 3 water environments in the life cycle of the salmon?

Puget Sound ecosystems:

Look at the poster about threats to marine ecosystems. What are 2 of those threats?

What is the Seafood Watch program?

VIII.Habitats

Read the poster about the rocky reef, sandy habitat, and eelgrass beds. What is the importance of each habitat?

Observe the tanks. Describe2 species that live in each habitat.

IX. The Dome

Describe 2 behavior patterns you notice here.

Notice coloration - dorsal (top) dark and ventral (underside) light. Why is this color pattern common?

X.Marine Mammals

Sea otters don't have a thick blubber layer for insulation. What 2 important adaptations do they have that help them stay warm in their cold water habitat?

XI.Watershedsexhibit:

What is a watershed?

What 2 major watersheds are described in this exhibit?

Read and lift the lids…

What are the 4 major sources of water that empty into Puget Sound? Surprised?
