TEACHING AND LEARNING COMMITTEE AGENDA BY CIRCULAR
PART 1 – ITEM FOR COMMUNICATION TO BE DEALT WITH EN BLOC
1.Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL) – Report on Teaching and Learning Week 2013 – File Ref: F45761
Attached (Attachment A) is a report from CATL on Teaching and Learning Week 2013.
For members’ information and noting.
PART 2 – ITEM FOR CONSIDERATION AND DECISION BY CIRCULAR
2.University Policy on Supplementary Assessment: Proposed Amendment - Ref F34996
A small number of units include a particular component that a student must pass in order to pass the unit overall, for example a portfolio component in a design unit or a laboratory component in a science unit. For these units, a result of FC (Failed Component) is possible if the student passes the unit overall but does not pass the component concerned.
A recent appeal case brought to light an absence of policy with respect to the availability of supplementary assessment opportunities in units in which an FC result is possible.
In accordance with the University Policy on Supplementary Assessment, faculties may make a case to the Academic Council to provide an opportunity for supplementary assessment in cases other than those set out in the Policy.
The Academic Secretary has reviewed this policy, in liaison with Faculty Sub-Deans and Senior Student Advisers, and advises that there is support to change the policy to clarify that, for units in which a result of FC is available, a mark of at least 45 must be obtained in the essential component in addition to a mark of at least 45 in the unit overall in order for supplementary assessment to be offered.
Faculties would have discretion to lower the required minimum component mark to 40 in cases described in Clause 1.5 of the Policy.
The relevant draft changes to the University Policy on Supplementary Assessment are attached (Attachment B) for consideration.
The Chair recommends that the Teaching and Learning Committee endorse the amendments to the University Policy on Supplementary Assessment, as attached to the Agenda, and refer the amended policy to the Academic Council for approval.
3.NEXT MEETING
The next meeting of the Teaching and Learning Committee will be held on Thursday, 5th September 2013 at 2.00pm in the Senate Room. The cut-off date for submission of items for the Committee’s agenda is Thursday, 22nd August 2013. Pleaserefer issues for discussion to the Executive Officer, Ms Sue Smurthwaite ().
