Meet Kayla! She’s a beautiful pit bull mix, around 4 years old. She is fully grown and weights 40lbs. Kayla loves massages, belly rubs, toys, male dogs (big and small), and she really loves people, both adults and children.
Kayla was rescued in the knick of time from a very crowded city shelter three years ago. She’s spayed and up to date on her shots. Her original adopter had some major life changes, which left Kayla looking for a new home. She is currently with her new adopter but, with the limited space and exercise, it is not fair to keep such a happy loving pup in such a limited situation.
She’s mostly housetrained (still needs a refresher once in a while if she is left home alone at night), and Kayla would do best with someone who isn’t gone all day. Her current dog mom is out of the house from 7:30am to 6:30pm. While a dog walker visits Kayla daily, it is evident that Kayla has progressively become more bored and depressed with all the alone time she has. She is very affectionate and does best when she receives the same amount of love and attention that she wants to give.
She walks well on a leash, particularly if she’s wearing a harness or choker collar, since she gets excited when she sees other animals. Want to go for a ride? Kayla will ride shotgun! She loves the car, and is a very well behaved passenger.
She currently lives in a small townhouse with no backyard but would do best with a fenced in area that she could roam regularly. While she doesn’t seem interested in fetch, she’s a big fan of toys that hide food, and she loves toys in general!
In short, a perfect home for Kayla includes plenty of snuggling with her humans, taking naps, chewing on toys, running around a fenced in yard, and playing with other dogs on occasion (she likes to play rough … dainty dogs need not apply). At times, Kayla likes to remind her dog friends that what’s hers is hers and what’s theirs is hers. She loves to share her toys with her human friends though!

How is Kayla with other dogs?
Kayla is great with most male dogs (big or small). Kayla usually does not do well with other female dogs. She has a very dominant personality so as long as the other dogs allow her to be the boss, all will work out. Before really getting to know any dog, there is potential for her to be toy and food aggressive. Basically, Kayla does best with submissive male dogs without the complications of toys and food. She is known as the “daughter-in-law” to a couple of her human neighbors as she is dating their male dogs. What can I say? She knows how to work it!
How is Kayla with other animals?
Kayla cannot be around small animals (i.e. cats, rabbits, squirrels, etc.) She has a very strong prey drive and has a history with the adoptee's pet former rabbits.
Does Kayla know any commands?
Yes! She is a quick learner especially when she has a doggy role model to follow. She knows sit, down, paw, stay, come, spin, and roll over. Sometimes she relies on hand motions along with the verbal command. A visual learner, she is! She also has been trained to "wait" for her food when being served her meals. She's waits very patiently and politely (minus the drooling) when you tell her to "wait" and will do so until you say, "ok!" or “kiss, kiss!” (Yes, she will give you a kiss).
How is Kayla in the car?
Kayla is great in the car! She prefers the front seat or wherever she can be closest to a person.
How is she around kids?
She is fantastic with the group of children who used to live on the same street as her and were between the ages of 4 and 10. At times, the kids became really loud and touchy but Kayla only ever responded positively to them. Other than that group, she’s been around kids in her new neighborhoodwho were between the ages of 4 and 12. She,in particularly, loved the little girl who was her same height. She wouldn’t stop licking her face and was very gentle.
Is Kayla house trained?
Kayla is not completely house trained. While at Patrick's, she's only had one accident in the last couple months. However, she's had more accidents when staying at my parents house (she’s SO sneaky). The house is much bigger and there is a lot more carpeting (which seems to be her targetted areas) but has gotten a lot better. Most of the time she won’t let us that she needs to go out so we let her out every hour or two. There have been minimal accidents within the last month.
What is Kayla’s medical history?
There are no medical records or notes prior to Kayla's surrender to the ACCT shelter in Philly.
Kayla has had a history of atleast 4 rectal prolapses which resulted in three separate purse string procedures and the final operation that led to her recovery. It was strongly suspected that her ongoing rectal prolapses were caused by an allergy to the animal proteins in standard dog kibble as she had frequent diarrhea. Directly following the surgery, Kayla was put on a strict diet that only consisted of the prescription food dog Purina HA (wet and dry). She currently remains on this diet and there has not been any medical issues related to food allergies or rectal prolapses.
Kayla used to suffer from separation anxiety but her anxiety has significantly diminished over the last two years. As long as she is not crated or confined to one room she is a happy pup! If I leave her at night, I will leave a light and the TV on since that is supposed to ease the anxiety of being in a space alone.
Finally, after a week or two from having Kayla, she became to leek urine. The vet said that it was most likely from being spayed which is surprisingly common in female dogs.
Previous Medications: Prion (for her urinary leaking) and Fluoxetine (separation anxiety), prescription dog food (severely allergic to animal proteins in standard dog kibble). She has been off of all medications for two years and is doing great!! She will have to remain on the prescription dog food thought. For some reason her stomach can handle bully sticks though.
Diet:
Her diet is very strict. On a daily basis, she was Purita HA along with roasted vegetables. Yes, I am aware, I have created a little diva in her. She seems to do fine with bully sticks for some reason so she get one about every other day.
How old is she?
We have no idea how old she is..between the ACCT’s opinion and two different vets, at the time of adoption, she was anywhere between 6 months and 5 years so I am saying that she is now 4 years old based on her energy levels.
