Purpose / This unit standard is for entrants in the signmaking industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: cut vinyl letters and graphics; prepare the surfaces; apply vinyl letters and graphics to smooth and non-smooth surfaces; and clean the site.

Explanatory notes
1Range
Two smooth surfaces, two non-smooth surfaces.
2Examples of surfaces include but are not limited to – glass, metal, plastic, cloth, fibreglass, acrylic, vinyl, concrete, paint finish, paper, card, wood, cork.
3All work practices shall meet the requirements of relevant legislation, including Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991, and the requirements of industry codes of practice and documented enterprise procedures in respect to health, safety, and environmental matters.

Outcome 1
Cut vinyl letters and graphics.
Evidence requirements
1.1Vinyl film selected meets job specification and is compatible with substrate.
Rangeinclude but are not limited to – cast vinyl film, calendered vinyl film.
1.2Application tape selected meets job specification and is compatible with substrate.
Rangeinclude but are not limited to – strong, medium, weak tack, clear tapes.
1.3Layout of sign meets job specifications.
Rangeexamples include but are not limited to – computer generated, direct layout.
1.4Cutting and weeding out of vinyl is completed to job specification.
Outcome 2
Prepare the surfaces.
Evidence requirements
2.1Surfaces are made clean and free from dust and previous lettering, adhesives, and any other material likely to affect adhesion and surface finish.
Outcome 3
Apply vinyl letters and graphics to the surfaces.
Evidence requirements
3.1Placement of vinyl complies with layout specification.
3.2Adhesion of vinyl to surface complies with job specification.
Rangeexamples include but are not limited to – short term, long term.
3.3Surface finishing of vinyl is consistent with job specification and free from all air bubbles and wrinkles.
Outcome 4
Clean the site.
Evidence requirements
4.1Sign and surrounding surfaces are clean and waste removed to client's/supervisor's satisfaction.
4.2Tools and equipment are stored according to supervisor's instructions.
