Colonial Advertising Project
Ms. Muse’s 8th Grade US History Classes
Introduction
The 13 original colonies were a refuge for those Europeans who needed change, escape, or a second chance. They held enticing opportunities, untold riches, extreme danger, and grave risk for those who braved the Atlantic crossing to reach them. Each colony was unique in population, resources, lifestyle, background and so on, although in some cases regional similarities united them.
What is the project?
Your job is to create an advertising pitch which is an attempt to sell, endorse, or promote a product or service. Your pitch is to sell one of the 13 colonies to get people to want to move there. You must create a brochure, poster, tri-fold, or PowerPoint. Anything else must be approved by Ms. Muse before starting.
Why are we doing this project?
The purpose of this project is to use research, cooperative learning, and creativity to uncover as much information as possible about one of the original 13 colonies. Creating a presentation will not only let you put this knowledge to use, but also allow you to use your creative talents to present the information in a polished, persuasive final product.
What are my resources?
Ms Muse, for one. Your US History book will also be key in obtaining the needed information. In addition, appropriately scholarly internet sites and library resources may provide extra information. Please e-mail your hyperlinks at to have your websites approved. You may also write hyperlinks down and turn into Ms. Muse for approval.
How much time will I have to work on this?
You will have several days of partial class periods to work on this project. Some work on this project may have to be outside of class. Also, progressive work on your brochures will be counted as homework (e.g. a rough draft of the written information in your brochure will be due, and then a rough sketch of your brochure’s layout will be due, etc.)
Do I have to present my finalized project to the rest of the class?
YES! You must wear nice clothes when presenting. Khakis, dress pants, skirt, etc. First, because public speaking ability is a VERY valuable skill to develop while in school. Second, because I need you to TRULY TEACH the rest of the class about the history of the colony on which you’ve become an expert! You will be encouraged to present together with your student learning partner (the one sharing the same colony), but if you are still nervous about this portion of the assignment, you can come and practice presenting to Ms. Muse after schoolbefore going up before the class.
DIRECTIONS:Your assignment is to create a brochure or poster about one of the 13 colonies. The following page has the requirements your project must have on it. Be sure to include lots of pictures and use the links available on my website for more research.
