Double Bay “favourites” fall to club mates

in inauguralDistrict Senior Fours final

TWO Double Bay Women’s Club teams at Bondi BC last week battled for the Inaugural Eastern Suburb’s District’s Senior Fours championship.

The Districthas initiated Senior events for competitors over 60-years-of age following a decision by the NSW Women’s Bowling Association to trial District Seniors Divisions, similar to those which are now part of the men’s bowling calendar at Zone level.

On exposed club form the combination of Gail Black, Sandra Ballard, Jenny Welton and Lorraine McLaughlin (pictured right) was considered favourites to take the title from Wendy Engelander, Carol Engelmann, Barbara Shur and Lorraine Becker.

It was, however, a very keenly contested encounter as Wendy Engelander made a brilliant debut in her first District final opposite the talented Gail Black.

At the same time, Carol Engelmanperformed consistently well compelling Black and Sandra Ballard to draw on experience under pressure to match them.

Barbara Shur and Lorraine McLaughlin were also playing at their top to provide a tough contest for Jenny Welton and Lorraine Becker.

Becker’s unit took the event on the closing ends. They scoredtwo shotson the 20thend and finished the match in style with a five count on the last to record a 24 -17 victory.

As District champions,the team will contest the Regional Playoffs on May 7 against St George Canterbury with the winner to clash with Sutherlandshire on May 8.


Pepe Glick takes “unfashionable” team

to 2012 Major Fours Championship

THE colourful Pepe Glick, collected his fourth Double Bay Club Major trophy when he led his unheralded team to the 2012 Major Fours Championship on Sunday, February 12.

Glick’s team of newcomers John Woods and Michael Becker alongside the skilful Alan Rosenberg, proved too solid for the more accomplished combination of three A-graders, Brandon Conway, Rob Fetherston, Matthew Fetherston and the Grade 2 regular, Mark Sack.

The Glick team, which had the form on the board following its surprise semi-final win overthe tournament’s heavyweight entry of Alan Simmons, Gerald Weinberg, Bernard Fridman and Jack Kampel, took the title with comparative ease on a 27-16 score line.

A member at Double Bay since 2003, the effervescent Pepe Glick, has his name on the Honours Boards for having sharedthree Major Triples titles (2005, 2006and 2008), plus being in last year’s triowhich was runner-up to the Doug King, Bernard Fridman and Jack Kampelteam.

His ability as a singles player is also marked by being runner-up in the 2009 Major Singles, as well as taking out the Handicap Singles in 2005 (Division 1)and in 2006, when it reverted to an “all-in”event. He was alsotheHandicap Singles runner up to James Cook in 2007.

In this year’s fours final, the Brandon combination with a wealth of experience, plus the ability of the up-and-coming star bowler, Matt Fetherston, got off to a great start on a clear day with an even-paced green.

Theytook a six count on the second end, followed by a triple on the third to be in charge at 8-3. Glick’s team pulled back the leeway with a collect of 14 shots to their opponent’s one by the 12thend to have a comfortable margin at 17-12.

The 17th end, when the Glick’s foursome held sway at 24-16, was the last on which Brandon and Co. added to their score.

By the 20th end it was the Glick team’s Championship asit took one shot to have an unbeatable lead at 27-16.

DOUBLE BAY’S new bowlers competed in a Round Robin singles tournament last Sunday, organised by Chairman of Selectors, Gerald Weinberg.

Eight recent newcomers to the club took part in the event over three games of 10 ends in two sections.

Section 1 was won by Sylvano Gabbani (pictured) with 3 wins (+23) from Ian Ossher, Eric Grusd and Rein Rowlands.

Section 2 went to Al Rowlands with 2 wins (+7) over Allan Kavnat, David Newman and Brian Hurwitz.

Weinberg said the players showed potential and he is considering playing a “final” between Gabbani and Al Rowlands this weekend

Bad weather mars Round Robin games

THUNDER and lightening with heavy rain marred matches in the second round of theZone 11 Round Robin matches played on Saturday, February 11.

Two of Double Bay’s six games were called off with the points shared at three each.

The Grade 1 team again disappointed going down at Waverley 1-5 (49-51 shots). Grade 3 kept its form with a 6-0 home win over Bondi, while the Grade 4 side showed improvement with a 4-1 decision over Tigers Five Dock at Double Bay. In Grade 5 Double Bay tied the shot count at 54 at home to Eastlakes, but lost the points at 2½ to 3½

THErain which saturated Sydney and most parts north of the State the past couple of weeks, not only caused the cancellation of the club’s Wednesday competition on January 25 and February 1, it also compelled club officials to postpone the announcement and presentation of the Shield to the 2010 Most Improved Player of the Year.

The Shield was inaugurated in 2003 to honour the memory of Wally Arenson,who was known as Double Bay’s (and Rose Bay’s) “genial gentleman” and is traditionally presented to the winner by Wally’s widow, Bess and their daughter, Belinda Levy, on a Wednesday during the afternoon tea break.

The 2010 winner would have been revealed and presented with the ShieldonWednesday, January 25, had the bowling session not be called off due to the pouring rain.

Club officials are loath to invite the Arenson family back to the club until they can be confident that the weather would not interfere with the presentation.

It has been a a couple of years since the Arenson Shield has been presented to the recipient.

The 2009 winner was Harry Black, but circumstances prevented the customary ceremony of the award.

Instead Harry, who was recognised for the rapid rise he made within the club’s grading ranks during the year, modestly accepted the honour without any fuss, but he posed with the Shield (pictured above) a couple of week’s ago so that Double Bay Watch’s pictorial file is complete for the Award.

Les Brem the 2008 recipient was the last to receive the Shield from the hands of Bess Arenson and Belinda Levy (pictured left).

Earlier winners have been Jack Rosen (2007), Ken Shapiro (2006), Mark Sack (2005), John Wineberg (2004) and the inaugural winner, Toby Grainger in 2003.
