Responsible to:Vice Principal responsible for Literacy

Job Purpose

To lead and manage the efficient and effective operation of the Academy’s Library and Student Information Service ensuring thathigh quality personalised learning support is available that contribute towards improved student outcomes.

Generic Responsibilities

Particular Responsibilities:

  • To ensure that students are safe and effectively supervised at all times when using the Library and Information Service;
  • To liaise with Strand Leadersto ensure that the Library and Information Service contributes effectively to the Academy’slearning priorities, curriculum needs and improved student outcomes;
  • To design, develop and operate a system that monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of the Library and Information Service;
  • To prepare relevant and appropriate business reports as required, which enable effective evaluation and assessment of impact and value for money;
  • To ensure all necessary administration and data associated with this role is up-to-date, relevant and available when requested;
  • To plan and manage the Library and Information Service budget;
  • To ensure accurate records are kept and made available which relate to which groups/classes and individuals use the Library and Information Service;
  • To undertake counter routines, including the issue and receipt of materials, renewal procedures, registration of users and maintenance of the Library Management System;
  • To ensure that effective behaviour for learning takes place in the Library;
  • To supervise entry and departure of those students using the Library;
  • To design, develop, implement and review procedures, working practices, strategies and systems relating to the successful delivery of the job purpose;
  • To select, purchase, organise, promote and maintain all books(including e books) and non-book resources that meets the recreational reading needs of students and the curriculum;
  • To optimise the use of new technology within the Library and Information Service both as a tool for the management of the service and as a learning resource for students;
  • To ensure that effective arrangements are in place for the systematic indexing, classification, and cataloguing of all resources and materials within the Library and Information Service;
  • To develop and coordinate stock routines, including stocktaking, sorting, shelving, filing, tidying, repair and maintenance of all resources and materials within the Library and Information Service;
  • To ensure a high standard of display and promotional material to enhance the standard of appearance of the library in order to provide an attractive environment conducive to achieving purposeful study and recreational reading;
  • To provide guidance and assistance to students on the effective use of specific information sourcesand resources that supports their development as independent learners, e.g. referencing and the choice of literature and materials to meet curricular and leisure needs including the compilation of book lists and other promotional materials where appropriate;
  • To design, plan, organise and manage events and activities that promote literature and reading development;
  • To ensure that the Library and Information Service complies with all relevant legislation including data protection, copyright etc.;
  • To ensure that new students have an appropriate induction to the Library and Information Service;
  • To support the Academy in the design and delivery of reading and literacy based intervention and development programmes
  • To ensure that all levels of Accelerated Reader are adequately stocked and that reading materials for each suitable intervention are easily accessible within the Library;
  • To organise and lead book clubs for students;
  • To organise and lead on the use of the Library by the local community out of school hours;
  • To encourage the active participation of students and teachers in accessing the full range of facilities available through the Library and Information Service;
  • To develop and maintain links with external agencies to maximise the availability of appropriate materials and information, including public libraries, museums, local HE and FE institutions, community information services etc.;
  • To maintain a high level of awareness of current children’s literature and developments in education and librarianship in order to ensure that the Library and Information Service provides an up to date service to its users;

To support the Strand Leader to:

  • provide strategic direction for all aspects of development within the strand to ensure all students supported by the work of the strand make better than expected progress and develop into caring, sensitive and tolerant individuals.
  • respond to preventing and challenging student bullying and racism within the Academy
  • develop leadership & management across the Strand.
  • establish the smooth running of the Strand including its general organisation and administration.
  • implement the Strand’s Quality Assurance and Appraisal programmes in monitoring, evaluating and reviewing the work of individuals and devising and implementing plans, both strand and individual, which lead to and promote a culture of continuous improvement.
  • work with specialist staff in order to make the most of their knowledge and to maximise student effectiveness within lessons.
  • manage effectively and efficiently the budget allocated to the team.
  • take the lead on weekly collaborative planning sessions and ensure these contribute to individual, strand and whole academy priorities.

  • To evaluate your own work critically to improve effectiveness;

  • To take responsibility for your own professional development and duties in relation to Academy policies and practices;
  • To establish effective working relationships and act as a role model through your presentation and personal and professional conduct;
  • To have a working knowledge of their relevant professional duties and legal liabilities.

  • To create a stimulating learning environment;
  • To work with new innovations including ICT applications;
  • To be aware of and respond appropriately to any health and safety issues.

Mentoring:

  • To work with individual students to establish goals and aspirations;
  • To monitor progress of students and devise/initiate intervention strategies as appropriate;
  • To communicate effectively with home;
  • To monitor behaviour, attendance and punctuality;
  • To review and act upon reports written on each student.
