AMA ROACHES MEET – PEAK DISTRICT28 – 30 NOV 14 ADMINISTRATION INSTRUCTIONANDAPPLICATION FORM

1.General. The AMA Roaches Meet will be based in the Roaches Bunkhouse, Upperhulme.

  1. This instruction provides you with the attendance Annex, which is used to apply for a place on the weekend and the administrative detail required in which to arrive properly prepared.
  1. Aim. The aim of the weekend is toprovide an opportunity to gain logbook experience towards JSAT qualifications andenable AMA members to meet others within the association.
  1. Programme of Events. A programme of events is at Annex A.
  1. Travel Directions. Upperhulme is located 4 miles NE of Leek along the A53 towards Buxton. The accommodation address is:The Roaches Bunkhouse, Upperhulme Mill, Upperhulme, Staffordshire, ST13 8TY. The Bunkhouses web site is
  1. Arrival. All members are expected to arrive on the Friday evening. Priority for the accommodation will go to members who are attending the whole weekend. If you book accommodation for the Friday night, but are delayed and unlikely to arrive until Saturday morning then please contact the meet leader on 07909 761646.
  1. Briefing. An initial brief will take place at 0900hrs Sat 29Nov at the accommodation. All members, without exception, are to attend the briefing.
  1. Accommodation and Messing. 16 beds in ‘The Roaches Bunkhouse' have been booked for the duration of the weekend. Please note that all personnel are required to bring their own bedding/sleeping bag, or purchase a sleeping bag at the accommodation. Rooms are to be left clean and tidy before departure. The cost for the weekend is dependent on the numbers attending but should be no more than £20 per person. For those that wish to camp under separate arrangements, there are campsites in the local area.
  1. The showers are operated on an honest box payment so ensure you have some change to put in it; 50p is sufficient for a quick shower.
  1. Meals for the duration of the weekend are an individual responsibility. There are cooking facilities in the bunkhouse. Cooked meals are available at Ye Old Rock Inn,approx. 150m awayfrom the bunkhouse ( and at the Roaches Tea Rooms ( located on the roadside near the crag.
  1. Equipment. Individuals must bring their own equipment and clothing, no kit is available from the organiser.
  1. Duty Status. The weekend is not a JSMTC(I) course therefore individuals must gain parent unit authority to attend and ensure details of the weekend are placed on Part 1 orders. Duty status is provided under the UAAT Rule. See AGAI Volume 1, Chapter 11, paragraph 11.014 for details.
  1. The weekend isnot recognised as an official ASCB event, therefore travel and subsistence costs must be authorised by own unit budgets – ask your RAO.
  1. Civilians. If you are a civilian member of the AMA then please note you will be required to have liability insurance if you want to undertake rock climbing activities as part of the weekend. This could be in the form of Association of Mountaineering Instructor Membership or upgrading your AMA membership for £15 (for one year’s cover) The British Mountaineering Council - membership. Please bring proof with you and annotate your return with what cover you will have.
  1. Safety. There will be a mandatory brief on the Saturday morning prior to any activities. The conduct of training is viewed very seriously by HQ Army and the AMA, so every measure necessary will be adopted to ensure activities are safe. The meet leader or technical lead has the authority to restrict individuals if they have insufficient experience.
  1. In accordance with best practice, all personnel are required to wear the recognised PPE for practical sessions.
  1. Safety briefs and risk assessments must be completed throughout the weekend.
  1. Personnel climbing/mountaineering in organised and qualified groups must comply with the following caveats:
  1. Personnel are to book out and back in with the meet leader, leaving a list of names, training location, ETA back and a contact mobile telephone number.
  1. Personnel are to use their own equipment and transport.
  1. JSP 419 ratios must be adhered to.
  1. Wet Weather. In the event of adverse weather, there are an abundance of indoor climbing walls in Stoke, Sheffield and Manchester, as well as various walks and scrambles in the vicinity. The meet leader can advise on suitable walls to meet individual requirements if the need arises.
  1. Points of Contact. Mr Gary DUFFY is managing all applications for the weekend. Please note that due to financial constraints, once places have been booked, payment is non-refundable. This is due to the AMA paying for the accommodation up front to secure the booking. The only exception to this rule will be if personnel that can no longer attend and nominate a replacement to take their place. In this case a new application and payment must be received prior to the old booking being cancelled.
