WOMEN IN POLITICS

A critical mass of female elected officials is needed before legislatures produce public policy representing women’s concern. Ontario’s political parties must first nominate more women, in order to increase the numbers of female members of provincial parliament.

That’s why Equal Voice Toronto has issued a challenge to all three provincial party leaders asking that they commit to nominating more women candidates. Positive responses where received from the three party leaders before the election was called. All party leaders accepted the challenge and agreed to run more women candidates. We all want to see more women elected. What can we do? We can vote for a woman, we can financially support a woman, or we can work for a woman on her campaign. And we can talk about the need for more women to represent us at Queen’s Park.

Equal Voice is a multi-partisan organization working to get more women elected to all parties of Canada.

The AFL, CIO now tweeted a new report. Women’s committees in worker organizations still making a difference concludes that labour organizations still have a need for women centered programs and committees. Female union members and the labour unions themselves still gain significant benefits from maintaining internal organizations and programs for women. Data was collected from both national and local unions as well as labour groups. They found that such programs even in female dominate unions or those headed by women, increased women’s union activism, develop leaders, expand collective bargaining, and help address issues like sexual harassment and pay equity.
