Poster presentation assignment
Introduction to Community Violence Prevention
Goals:
- To engage students in dialogue with community members about their vision and goals for a safer community
- Inspire leadership within the students to take ownership of their ideas and preferred methods of social change
- To engage students in the creation and presentation of ideas at the Thursday, October 18, 2012Violence Prevention Stakeholders Event
Steps to Completing the Assignment:
- Pick your area of interest (sexually exploited minors, boys and men of color, young women of color, low income communities, gang affiliated youth and adults, re-entry population, etc)
- Based on your level of expertise what potential solution would you be interested in exploring and sharing with others (See the Prevention Institute’s spectrum of prevention areas 1 -6)
- Decide if you need to do this project individually or in small groups (no larger than 3 people per group – self organized)
- Conduct Research, Learn more about the issue in order to develop stronger solutions
- Construct your poster using pictures, graphs, statistics, quotes, etc.
THE POSTER PRESENTATION HAS TWO PURPOSES:
1)TO ENGAGE THE STUDENT IN RESEARCH AND DIALOGUE AROUND A PROBABLY SOLUTION TO A LOCAL COMMUNITY ISSUE
2)FOR STUDENT’S TO GET FEEDBACK FROM PRACTITIONERS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS ABOUT THEIR IDEAS
NOTE: Each student will be required to complete this assignment and field questions about their individual solution to violence in their neighborhood, city, state, nation, etc.
EACH STUDENT WILL TURN IN THE FOLLOWING FOR 100 POINTS
1)½ PAGE – 1 PAGE single spaced summary of their proposed solution
2)Poster to present and discuss at the Creative Solutions for Change event
3)Citations page for any data, statistics or pictures used.
Poster Presentation Scoring Rubric
Title (5 pts) – must include name, any affiliations, title of presentation
____ (2.5) to be printed on poster presentation

Summary (40 pts)
____ (15) a 150 word (or less) abstract is included in the summary
____ (20) rationale for work: why this solution is interesting, important, relevant and/or timely
____ (5) solution is unique and relevant to the need addressed
References (10 pts)
____ (5) must include citations from data they present. Each poster must present at least two citations. (ex: Alameda County Public Health Department Statistics, OPD Crime Stats, etc)
