BACKGROUND

Oxfam works in three ways: we respond to emergencies, saving lives and helping survivors recover; we provide people with the skills and resources to lift themselves out of poverty; and we campaign to change the unjust policies that keep people in poverty.
This role sits within the Communications and Media team, which is part of a wider Engagement Directorate. The main focus of the Engagement Directorate is to engage, educate and mobilise the public, publicise the work of Oxfam within New Zealand and raise vital public funds for our advocacy, humanitarian and development work.
The Communications and Media team plays a key role in supporting these objectives by influencing the opinions and activities of key stakeholders through its media outreach work, publications, multi-media and electronic communications. While part of the Communications and Media team, the postholder will be a key member of at least one multi-disciplinary and/or cross-functional project group, working alongside staff from other teams to deliver objectives for that specific project.
The Communications and Media team is one of five functional teams: Supporter Relations, Relationships Fundraising, Communications, Digital, and Fundraising Events. The team has functional responsibilities for:
- Media and PR
- Content for email, online and print channels, and content sign off
- Story gathering and telling
- Film, photography & graphic design
- Brand implementation
Using the following channels:
- Oxfam publications and other print materials
- All online channels – social media, email, website, digital
- Earned media
JOB PURPOSE
Play a key role in ensuring that ONZ achieves a strong public profile and effective public and stakeholder engagement for its humanitarian, campaigning, programme, advocacy, fundraising and marketing work through the design and implementation of effective, inspiring, engaging and innovative communications strategies, publications and editorialcontent.
PRIMARY Responsibilities
Content and editorial
- Develop and produce publications, reports, online content and promotional materials for different Oxfam purposes/audiences. This includes:
- Providing support for ONZ fundraising, campaigns and programming through the development and production of effective communication publications, materials and supporter focused resources, in coordination with relevant functional team members.
- Working collaboratively with colleagues across Oxfam International to gain access to top quality story gathering and content from across the confederation, ensuring it is delivered to ONZ in a format and content style which can be used easily across teams.
- Writing and creating digital and social media content, including blogs for ONZ’s website, along with other members of the Communications & Media team.
- Writing and creating opinion pieces for Oxfam’s own online and print channels, and for external online and print channels,
- Contributing to the content and editing of ONZ’s key supporter magazine, Te Iho, according to the brief provided by the Supporter Appeals Specialist,ensuring all copy is written and produced to a high standard, and that content is inspiring, story driven and supporter centric
- Recruiting, managing and effectively supporting interns who may be engaged on communications activities or projects.
- Support the Communications & Media Manager in the implementation of Oxfam’s brand by ensuring a consistent and appropriate use of language, imagery and graphics across all print, online and multimedia work.
- In coordination with the other Communications Advisor, provide communications and editorial support to members of the Engagement Directorate with the aim of gaining exposure for ONZ’s fundraising and marketing activities and development work, and achieving popular mobilisation through appropriate online, print and other media/communications work.
- Provide editorial and brand support for all teams, to help ensure that ONZ’s engagement, fundraising and reporting materials are consistent, of a high standard and accurately convey Oxfam’s work.
- Provide and approve print content and images for use by external organisations, suppliers and sponsors in newsletters, online and other publications.
Planning and strategy
- Work with relevant staff across the organisation to develop and execute integrated communications strategies that will help ONZ to maintain a base of loyal donors,attract new supporters and campaigners, achieve our fundraising targets and effectively communicateour work, priorities and successes to diverse audiences.
- Contribute to the design and implementation of communication strategies and plans developed by other members of the Communications and Media team as required.
- Identify and manage promotional opportunities that align with core priorities, arising from strategic relationships, current events, trends in the development debate, and through the normal spectrum of Oxfam’s work.
- In collaboration with the Advocacy & Campaigns team, contribute creatively to campaigns and advocacy conception and assist with campaign implementation by providing editorial, design and media support.
Other
- Manage external relationships with key stakeholders, influencing outcomes to achieve effective engagement for Oxfam. This includes, but it not limited to key facets of ONZ’s interaction with private sector partners, creative services companies and other NGOs.
- Participate in ONZ’s decision-making processes through twice-yearly reflection and planning sessions and assist with the preparation of quarterly reports to the ONZ Board and with other internal reports.
- Assist with media activities as required. This includes:
- being the media/digital contact aspart of a weekend emergency roster,
- providing short term surge capacity during a humanitarian emergency,
- undertakinga short term humanitarian deployment to the Pacific region in an emergency Communications and Media capacity, if requested (and another member of the Communications and Media team is unavailable).
- Undertake any other tasks that are in keeping with the scope of the role, as directed by the Communications and Media Manager.
COMPETENCIES
Qualifications, knowledge and experience
- Strong communications experience, which includes experience of editing and commissioning articles, producing publications,marketing and web content and driving social media reach
- Knowledge of marketing and promotion from a fundraising perspective
- Some knowledge of digital campaigns and social media development
- An understanding of branding and application of brand identity
- An active interest in social justice and international development issues and knowledge of the activities in which Oxfam is engaged
- Relevant tertiary qualification e.g. in communications, design, journalism, marketing or equivalent industry experience
- A demonstrated commitment to innovation and an understanding of why it is important for organisations like ONZ
- Knowledge of New Zealand and Pacific cultures, and political, social and economic contextsis desirable
- Knowledge of humanitarian contexts would be an advantage
- Some experience of coordinating media briefings, preparing media releases and knowledge of information gathering, dissemination and management techniques would be useful

TOIL
Some out of hours and weekend working may be required for which time off in lieu will be given in accordance with the organisation’s policy.
TRAVEL
The postholder may be required to undertake occasional travel within New Zealand and to the Pacific region (max. 2 weeks) as part of an Oxfam emergency response.
Some areas where Oxfam New Zealand works are subject to civil conflict and/or natural disasters, which could be potentially hazardous. Oxfam New Zealand has established security procedures to minimise the risk to its staff and partners.
