I refer to your email dated and received 21 February 2011;our ref FOI090.

I am pleased to enclose the information you requested and trust that it meets your requirements.

a) the total number of posts receiving protected and/or preservedsalaries in 2009-10

Effective 31 March 2010 there were733 posts preserved.

b) whether or not the total number of posts has increased orreduced in 2010-11 and by how many

Effective 31 March 2011, there was a reduction of 420 preserved posts when compared with the number preserved on the 31 March 2010.

c) the total annual cost of those salaries in 2009-10

£18.5 million. Note this figure is the total annual cost of basic salary including preservation.

d) whether or not the annual cost has increased or reduced in2010-11 and by how much

The annual cost of salary plus preservation for preserved posts has decreased by £7.3 million.
