“I am a librarian. I discovered me in the library. I went to find me in the library. Before I fell in love with libraries, I was just a six-year-old boy. The library fueled all of my curiosities, from dinosaurs to ancient Egypt. When I graduated from high school in 1938, I began going to the library three nights a week. I did this every week for almost ten years and finally, in 1947, around the time I got married, I figured I was done. So I graduated from the library when I was twenty-seven. I discovered that the library is the real school.” –Ray Bradbury, 1920-2012Librarian Peer Mentoring
In lieu of a formal mentoring program the SLS would like to coordinate peer mentoring. One example would be to visit or request a visit from a fellow librarian in our SLS. You do not have to be new to your position to apply. In this “Brave New World” we need to address SLOs, the Common Core and the Empire State Information Fluency Continuum. It is new to all of us. Let me know how you would like to be mentored? This is a brainstorming request! There are no ‘bad” ideas. - April

The Robert E. Barron Cultural Media Award
Attention SSL members! The Robert E. Barron Cultural Media Award encourages the purchase of humanistic non-book materials to enrich the collection of the Library beyond the usual purchase of curriculum materials. The award is $500. It is presented at the SSL Spring Conference.
Deadline: November 9
Qualifications
Applicant must be a current member of NYLA/SSL.
Evidence of use of non-book materials for a humanistic program and/or activity with the school librarian during the current (or last school) year that has enriched the School Library beyond the purchase of curriculum materials. Collaborative activities between the librarian and teaching staff are strongly encouraged.
According to Stanford University, the humanities can be described as the study of the myriad ways in which people, from every period of history and from every corner of the globe, process and document the human experience. Since humans have been able, we have used philosophy, literature, religion, art, music, history and language to understand and record our world. These modes of expression have become some of the subjects that traditionally fall under the humanities umbrella.

SLS Conference Scholarships
I meet with Todd Green this week and we with advisement from the business office have decided that the SLS will not be able to offer scholarships to conferences for the 2012-2013 school year. I apologize for the time you have put into having a conference approvedby your district. The SLShas been generous in previous years and unfortunately no longer has the extra funding to provide this valuable professional development.

Brown Envelopes
Reminder: No library should have more than one brown envelope at a time. Please return the extra envelopes to the SLS. We have no remaining envelopes for some schools. If you receive an empty manila envelope addressed to your library it means we do not have any of your envelopes left.
Coordinated Cooperative Collection Development Packets
SLS will send out CCCD packets upon request prior to November 15th. We usually send the packet with ordering information out mid-November with a due date of mid-January. I hesitate to move up the launch date due to the chaos of the start of the school year.

As the new librarian (whose money was all spent before she got here!) I am looking for some help. What are the chances that someone in the BOCES system received BookList and Booklinks that they could share with me?

2012-13 Letters About Literature
TheEmpire State Center for the Book is once again a participant in the national Letters About Literature program sponsored by the Library of Congress National Center for the Book. New York State students in grades 4-10 are eligible to participate in the state program. The state winners in the three age categories go on to represent New York on the national level.Last year NYS submitted 1500 letters to the national organization.
The program has student readers write to an author living or dead describing how that author’s work somehow changed the reader’s view of the world or himself/herself. Readers respond to the book they’ve read by exploring the personal relationship between themselves, the author, and the book’s characters or themes.
There are three competition levels:
•Level 1 for grades 4-6
•Level 2 for grades 7-8
•Level 3 for grades 9-10
NYS Letters about Literature Winners & Finalists:
The Empire StateCenter for the Book’s Letters About Literature program will select a state winner and two-three runners-up in each of the three age categories.
