Hi again everyone and welcome to the May newsletter for K9. We hope you enjoy reading it and hopefully find it useful. As you may know, K9 have been really busy and have been able to build 12 new dog kennels thanks to your continual support over the last few years. Needless to say, as soon as they are built, then they become full, but I am afraid as you all know, that is the way it is on the Costa Blanca, withso many animals being abandoned. We are now in the process of drawing up plans for a new cattery, so will keep you all informed.
Recently, K9 have taken in a number of dogs from private individuals, mostly who have been going back to the UK and have been reluctant to take their dogs back with them. Sadly,many of these dogs have come to us quite poorly, usually with Leismaniosis or Heartworm. Boththese diseases are curable, as in the case of Heartworm,or controllable, as in the case of Leismaniosis. Both diseases are avoidableand can be prevented through either vaccines or wearing preventative collars. So please, if you have a dog, talk to your local vet about preventative measures, it is part of being a responsible owner. K9 has been able to treat these dogs with the excellent help of the vets we use and although in some cases it has taken time, all the dogs affected are now fine and are leading a good quality of life. K9 will never refuse a sick or injured animal, even though the animal may seem un-homeable. We feel all animals deserve a chanceand because we are all volunteers within K9, we are able to channel all funds raised to the wellbeing of our animals. Indeed, all our dogs are vaccinated and wear collars to prevent some of the terrible diseases which can affect them.
K9 have a policy that no elderly, healthy or curable animal will be put to sleep, we will only put a terminally ill animal down on the advice of a vet, in particular to relieve any suffering that the animal may be in. We have many animals in our care that may be considered not suitable for adoption for a number of reasons, and these animals will spend their time in our care, some in foster care and some in the excellent care of our Kennel Managers. We have taken in many elderly animals and most have found fantastic homes with older people who want a more sedentary companion.
Please continue to support us by donating to either of our shops or dropping any change you have in our collection boxes that you will find in the area. Every little helps and will make a difference to our animals. Animal care is expensive, so without your help we would not be able to provide the excellent care our animals have.

During the last three months we have:
Spayed / castrated 10 cats and dogs
Tested 1 cat for leukemia/aids
Vaccinated 1 dog
Treated 1 dog with acupuncture for spinal problems
Treated 1 cat for a gunshot wound
Treated 1 dog for an eye operation and 1 for a mammary tumour
Treated 2 cats in the hospital for intestinal infections
Treated 1 cat for a damaged leg (needed to be amputated)
Treated 3 cats for gingivitis and 3 for cat flu
This has cost approx. 1,600 euros
The routine costs of the animals in our care was 4,264 euros.
The shops raised 9,083 euros.

BIRTHDAY GIRL
April 17th was a very special birthday for our Vice-President. Many close friends and family met together at the Marina Bar, Torrevieja, to celebrate this special day which was organised by Sheila's husband, Peter. Sheila is a founder member of K9 and she and her husband Peter, work tirelessly for K9. Apart from anything else, they are always out and about collecting and replacing our collection tins, which can be found in many bars in the Costa Blanca area.
K9 will always have a tremendous amount of love and respect for this wonderful lady.
K9 have two amazing shops where you can pick up some fantastic bargains as well as designer clothes at amazing prices. The one on La Marina is on Calle Alfredo Kraus, opposite San Anton, whilst the other is just off the square in Almoradi, on the corner of Calle Cervantes and Calle La Reine. All our staff are there to help you with your purchases, should it be electrical, clothing, bric a brac or furniture, nothing is too much trouble.
We will also arrange to collect any donations you wish to make or help you with deliveries on items you have bought. So do not forget have a browse, you never know what you might find.
Working in either of the shops is great fun and you get to meet like-minded people. If you have a few hours to spare and would be interested in working in either of the shops, then call 965077208 for La Marina or 610832726 for Almoradi.
K9 VEHICLE
I am sure most of you have seen the K9 van out and about on the Costa Blanca area. Well fortunately, it recently sailed through the ITV, otherwise I do not know where we would be without it. Anyway, not only is it used for transporting and rescuing abandoned animals, but it is also used for collecting all your generous donations you wish to give to our shops. Remember all your donations do make a difference to our animals.
We are also looking for volunteers to work a couple of days a week, either driving or working on the vehicle.

K9 VOLUNTEERS
We desperately need volunteers to help us at our kennels and cattery. We've not long moved so there is still a lot of sorting out to be done. It's not everyone's cup of tea, volunteering, but if you love dogs and/or cats and want to be involved with their care, please contact us. Helping could involve walking dogs, playing ball with them, grooming them, giving them a bath even, or just showing them love and affection. More hands on with kennel cleaning, maintenance including painting, sorting bedding out, we have a long list and then there's out cats and kittens! So something for everyone!

At K9 our aim and mission is to rescue and/or rehome dogs and cats, however our capacity is limited and so that our capacity for taking these animals in, does not decrease WE NEED YOUR HELP.
Some of our dogs and cats are mature and not necessarily easy to rehome because a lot of people are looking for younger dogs. Therefore, have you considered fostering one of them for us, which would mean you looking after them, feeding them and showing them all the love and affection they need, but K9 will take care of any veterinary bills. Not only would it give us space to house one more, but more importantly, you would be giving them a better quality of life than we could ever give them here. [1]
