Reading Subject Leader Termly Report
Spring term 2016-2017
Progress towards School Development Plan 2016-2017
This is a summary of progress made towards achieving the targets.
The follow-up to the Guided Reading (GR) input in Autumn term has been carried out in Spring term (23/01/17).
Guided Reading is where the teacher splits her class into groups of 6 or less. The teacher then chooses a text matched to the groups reading ability. They work together on reading and understanding the text, through grouped teaching and independent activities, directly linked to the text. The remaining children in class will work on independent reading, spellings or other reading focused activities such as book reviews or writing about characters in books they are reading.
Scrutiny 23/01/17:
Success Criteria:
Children are receiving Teacher led GR session;
Children’s book talk is happening at least once a week;
Children are being encouraged to independently complete activities following on from their study of their book;
Children’s reading skills, as a result, are being developed and improved through regular teacher focus; and
Children are participating in a structured round of reading based activities.
Accelerated Reader (see details on AR action plan at the end of this document) is being used more efficiently but there continue to be areas of concern. These are being addressed through regular monitoring and follow-up emails to teachers to remind them of the actions they should carry out. As in Autumn term, I have recently audited average percentage pass rates of all children and teachers, and, where both average pass rate for the class and number of children who have an average below 80%, has deteriorated, the teachers will be made aware(see below ‘Monitoring’ 17/03/17).

2.2lTwo teachers (SL/LM) volunteered to attend the moderation. Met with both teachers in Novemberto lay out requirements on how they should collect evidence (I-pads provided). Met again in January and reviewed collection. HLTAs provided cover required two half days, one to collate evidence and second to attend moderation. Whole school reading moderation needs to be carried out prior to this – ML to arrange– could not carry this out because there were no available slots.
19/01/17 Teachers collated evidence, including use of I-pads to record reading evidence. Presented and discussed at moderation. Assessments were upheld.
