Biblical words, underlined with dots, are explained in the brackets.

1. “Know” centers on the mind. “Reckon” (Account for biblical truth) centers on the heart.

2. In our hearts, we must reckon ourselves dead to sin and alive to Christ; we must also relinquish ourselves to God; and we must realize we are under the amazing grace of God.

Paul Introduces God’s Threefold Method Leading to a Changed Life in Christ:

1. Know—it’s centered on the mind.

2. Reckon—it’s centered on the hearts.

3. Yield—touches on the will.

A. The Choices

Romans 6:13, AV - 13 …but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead….

Romans 6:15–16, HCSB - 15 What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Absolutely not! 16 Don’t you know that if you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of that one you obey —either of sin leading to death or of obedience leading to righteousness?

We can live for self/sin—Rebellion

We can live for God—Righteousness

B. The Changes

Romans 6:17–18, HCSB - 17 But thank God that, although you used to be slaves of sin, you obeyed [Lit., “To answer a knock at the door.”] from the heart that pattern of teaching you were transferred to, 18 and having been liberated from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness.

He speaks of past failures

He speaks of precious faith

He speaks of our present freedom.

C. The Challenges

Romans 6:19, HCSB - 19 I am using a human analogy because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you offered the parts of yourselves as slaves to moral impurity, and to greater and greater lawlessness, so now offer them as slaves to righteousness, which results in sanctification.

You’re either a slave to sin and free from God

Or, you’re a to God and free from Sin

There is no other option

D. The Compensations

Sin - Romans 6:20–21, HCSB - 20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free from allegiance to righteousness. 21 So what fruit was produced then from the things you are now ashamed of? For the end of those things is death…23 For the wages of sin is death….

Wick Wasted Wretched

Salvation - Romans 6:22, HCSB - 22 But now, since you have been liberated from sin and have become enslaved to God, you have your fruit, which results in sanctification [ie., set apart for God’s service]—and the end is eternal life!

Life Application Section: “Some things will never change”

The word of God will never change.

The will of God will never change

The way to God will never change.

The wages of sin will never change.

The work of the church will never change.

/ By God’s grace, we must be dead to ourselves and alive to Christ as our victory over sin will be in direct proportion to His victory over us.
Who’s slave will you be? Sin or the Savior
