READING TEACHER OF THE YEAR – SECONDARY 6-12

A nomination for Reading Teacher of the Year (Secondary 6-12) may be made by any Council. Each Council may establish its own procedure for selecting the person who they believe deserves this recognition at the STATE LEVEL. The nomination from a Council should reflect the consensus of opinion of the entire Council.

Criteria Necessary for Nomination

  • To be eligible for this award, a nominee must spend 50% or more of their instructional time actively engaged in the teaching of students in grades 6-12.
  • The nominee must be involved in the teaching of reading. If reading instruction occurs in another setting besides the classroom, please specify and document time spent teaching reading.
  • The nominee must have a minimum of five years teaching experience.
  • The nominee must be a current member of local, state, and national IRA councils, and have been active for a minimum of three years. (Non-membership automatically disqualifies nominee.)
  • The nominee must participate in local Council activities.

Procedure

  1. Written information regarding the nominee should NOT MENTION THE NOMINEE BY NAME. A separate cover sheet (see enclosed) should contain the necessary information. The nominee's name will be revealed to the Committee members only after the Committee has made a decision. Help simplify the State Awards Committee's task by following the guidelines as closely as possible.
  2. Please include innovative teaching methods used in the classroom.
  3. A letter from the Council President should CLEARLY SUBSTANTIATE the reasons which were determining factors in the selection of the Council's nomination. The Council President's letter should include all information asked for in Sections I & V of the "Suggested Outline for Submitting Nomination." Section V can also be written by another council member

The nominee should include information in Sections II, III, IV, VI, and VII.

  1. Written information provided by the nominee should follow the suggested outline of the official entry form. (Attached)
  2. Mail cover sheet, president's letter, and nominee's entry form together. The committee making the selection will use a tally sheet.
