Lessons
Enrolment in instrumental or vocal lessons is for the period of October2010 through to the middle of June 2011. 40 minute individual lessons are taught once a week over thirty weeks of the academic year by qualified, experienced music teachers.
Students in DIS Years 1-10 and UAS Grades 1-10 will usually have their lesson on the same day of the week although lessons take place on a rotational basis throughout the day so that students will not miss the same class on a regular basis. Special arrangements need to be made for Kindergarten (UAS) and FS 1,2, and Year 1 (DIS). Senior Secondary students at DIS (IB1/2) and UAS (Grades 11 & 12) can take their lesson during their lunch period, during free periods or at specific out of class times dependent upon availability. Currently there are no lessons taught in after school time.
Please note that it is up to the student to ensure that they keep their class work up to date and make up what they have missed when their lesson falls during any class time. It is important that before starting your child with lessons, you consider whether they are coping well already with school life and the workload. Learning an instrument requires a lot of mental energy and practice time. If you have any hesitations about the readiness of your child you should discuss your concerns with the Instrument and Vocal Program Coordinator.
Cost of lessons
The cost is AED130 per 40 minute lesson for individual lessons. There are 30 lessons scheduled for the current academic year. The total cost for 30 lessons during the academic year is AED3900 or adjusted depending on date of enrolment for the period to the end of the academic year. Fees are split into first and second semester charges of AED1950 for 15lessons per semester. A non-refundable deposit of is AED300 required for each new enrolment and this will be deducted from the second semester lesson fee accounts (the balance depending on lesson weeks remaining for the semester). Fees are payable to the school Cashier’s Officebefore 2nd week, since the lessons commence. Please do not give any account payments to the instrumental or vocal teacher. After the first semester of enrolment, lesson fees are payable in advance of the new semester lesson commencement. Notification will be sent from the Music Department via email.
Instrument Rental
For beginning students, some instruments are available for rent from DIS & UAS although it is preferable for students to provide their own instrument. Please seek the advice of the Instrumental and Vocal Program Coordinator before purchasing an instrument. The cost of instrument rental is AED300 per semester. Fees from rental charges go towards the general maintenance of the school instrument collection and the provision of ensemble resources. A rented instrument will be released to the student upon receipt of the Instrument Rental Agreement form to the school Instrumental and Vocal Program Coordinator in the Music Department. An Instrumental Rental fee invoice for each semester the school instrument is provided will be sent from the Accounts Department and is payable to the school Cashier’s Office. Please do not give any account payments to the instrumental or vocal teacher.
Instrumental Lesson Commitment
It is expected that students in the instrumental program will make a commitment to continue their instrumental lessons for the full enrolment period to mid-June. Special arrangements for partial reimbursement can be made for students leaving the school.
Absence from Scheduled lessons
Notification of absence from school due to illness can be made by contacting the school Instrumental and Vocal Coordinator before 8am by email to . Notification must be received at least 24 hours in advance for school field trips, excursions or other matters where absence from school is organised ahead of time. Every effort will be made to reschedule a lesson where notification of absence from school has been given in advance. It will not be possible to make up missed lessons where notification is not given in time for the teacher to be notified before the teaching day begins. Fees for all scheduled lessons remain and will not be refunded in the case of absence.
Opportunities to perform
DIS & UAS provide many opportunities for students to perform either individually or in a group as part of an ensemble. Apart from regular instrumental recitals near the end of each semester, there are many other concerts and recitals where students can present the results of their instrumental and vocal studies.
Cancellation Fee
Enrolment for instrumental lessons is an academic year-long commitment. It is possible to withdraw from instrumental tuition during a semester but fees for the current semester remain. Please inform the school Instrumental and Vocal Program Coordinator directly if circumstances require cancellation of lessons for any reason. Do not rely on verbal messages being passed on from your child’s homeroom teacher or the instrumental teacher.
Community and Service/CAS Credit
Students in the schoolInstrumental and Vocal Program and music ensembles can obtain Creativity, Action and Service credits for each semester of enrolment. Students need to inform their respective CAS Coordinators to ensure credit for these activities.
