Job Description – Presenter

Reporting to:

Education Manager

Overall Purpose:

To present public and schools programmes and support the Education Team in programmes development. To provide an enjoyable and first-class experience for all participants.

General Duties:

  • Present educational programmes in the Sir Patrick Moore Planetarium, work as a Flight Director within the Challenger Learning Centre, and operate the Star Dome portable planetarium, deliver workshops, present ICT based learning programmes and other outreach and in-house programmes as required.
  • Presenting public family talks and busking activities during school holidays.
  • Facilitate sleepovers for schools, scouts and guide groups, including overnight.
  • Assist in the smooth day-to-day operations of each programme (e.g. checking supplies and set-up etc).
  • To be involved in the promotion and marketing of education and public programmes to visitors and schools
  • Support the Education Team in the development and delivery of new programmes and special events.
  • Ensuring optimum customer care is delivered at all times.
  • Participate in evaluating programmes.
  • Be familiar with National Space Centre operational and administrative procedures to ensure that customer care and other staff are not compromised.
  • Working as a member of the National Space Centre team in ensuring that all Health and Safety regulations are adhered to, and that the Health and Safety of the visitor, and other employees are not compromised.
  • Ensure that programmes are conducted in line with Education Team’s working with children guidelines.
  • Alerting the Technical Team to any problems encountered during execution of duties.
  • Undertaking training and development as part of the Personal Development Programme.

Person Specification - Presenter

Experience and Knowledge

  • Experience of working face-to-face with members of the public
  • Experience of working with children in an informal or formal learning environment (paid or voluntary)
  • Knowledge of child protection practices and procedures
  • Interest in astronomy, space science and science in general
  • Experience of working within a science centre or similar environment is desirable

Skills

Good communication skills – written, verbal and interpersonal

  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Ability to prioritise busy and varied workload
  • Good IT literacy is desirable

Other Points

  • The role requires working evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays. Some early morning starts. Some overnight travel will be required. Flexibility is required.
